Hannah George Mindfulness Assignment by Hannah George

The mindfulness website I chose to use for this assignment was Calm.com. I downloaded the mobile app onto my phone and chose to do the “7 days of Calm: Learn the basics of mindfulness meditation” beginners program. I chose this program to make sure I had the opportunity to make a strong foundation and understand what my purpose of doing meditation is, and what I want to get out of it. I want to continue doing this form of meditation as long as I possibly can, so this assignment is very valuable to me!

I felt very happy with this program after the first session. This guided meditation had me focus on my posture and comfort level in order to ensure I could feel my breaths throughout this 10 minute session. I also enjoyed that while I was supposed to be silently thinking and focusing on finding my purposes in meditation, there was rainforest-like background noise. I am a firm believer in white noise to increase focus, especially in the classroom. This white noise helped me clear my head even more and show me that meditating is not just sitting in silence thinking, but learning to appreciate my surroundings and life in any way I want.

This session allowed me to focus on words as I took large, deep breaths with the same rainforest-like white noise I described in my previous post. It told me to focus on the word “in” which led me to my main focus: what kind of teacher do I want to be in the next year? Will I be a warm demander, or am I stuck in the same environment of difficult children? After thinking about this for two minutes, I was promoted to “regroup and help my brain become un-scattered.” I went back to thinking more positively; how will I make an impact in the classroom with quite work meditation time? I am planning on having students do a guided meditation where they think about three questions for 15 minutes, then write their response in a journal. I was very focused on my summer school plans for the remainder of this meditation, which I was content with. I am optimistic for summer school and to continue my meditation practice!

This session focused on paying attention. Paying attention is something I struggle with deeply, so I very much appreciated the time to relax and let my brain wander without the feeling of fear. Something I began thinking of when becoming aware of my surroundings was my warm demander teaching style. I am one to be very warm towards my students and I am amazing at making connections, but have trouble being stern. I have worked hard during my summer school days to create an environment where my students feel happy and welcomed while also understanding my high expectations. When I have my next meditation session, I want to reflect on my week and thoughts and see what improvements I have made!

This session was called “pulling out of autopilot” and it gave me a great opportunity to reflect on my warm demander mindset. I feel myself often in autopilot and only think about about just having the students complete the assignments and if they are learning about what is on the paper in front of them. I realized I need to push my students harder and that all classroom are an opportunity for students to learn. For example, I helped engage my students by making sure they were sitting upright and holding their pencil and paper while writing. Although this seems silly it made a difference in the effectiveness of my students work!

Th The value of non-doing. The title peaked my interest when I first saw it, and I was excited to engage in this session. It brought me through a series of exercises that helped me focus on genuinely being calm, still, relaxed, and literally doing nothing. I really enjoyed this session and found myself doing it after work, and after I completed all of my assignments in order to help myself relax. I will be using this in my summer school classroom at the end of the day to show my students the value of taking a break and relaxing after working hard!

This session was something I felt I really needed after a long work week. It brought me through a series of exercises practicing patients and realize that waiting is not the worst thing in the world and then it gives you time to reflect on your day and be with your thoughts. I had a rather challenging week at school as I had a student whose schedule at home was very irregular. I definitely needed to be reminded that patient is a virtue and appreciated this session deeply.
