“Our house was separated from the river by a crescent-shaped parcel of five acres of wild uncleared growth...When I reached the river I stripped down to my chemise, floating on my back with my shimmy gently billowing around me in the mild currents, luxuriating in the coolness of the water flowing around me.” (3)

Calpurnia goes to the river when she needs a break from the heat and from others. The river in the story is her safe place and this shows the readers how Calpurnia feels about her family and about the heat. The setting of the river is a very important spot because Callie goes there a lot and it is also close to her house and it is sort of in her backyard.

“The laboratory was just an old shed that had once been a part of the slave quarters.” (4)

This is grandpa's main area in which he spends most of his days. Calpurnia also enjoys coming in here later in the book. This is her main escape from her more lady like task that her mother assigns her to. Grandfather also stores his science equipment and home made whiskey in here.

“We parked among a motley collection of farm wagons and gigs and dogcarts pulled up higgledy-piggledy on the grassy field adjoining the many tents.” (276)

The fentress fair is a place filled with some good, some bad memories for Calpurnia. It is also the place where she sees the first “automobile”. At the fair, Calpurnia won 3rd place in a competition, however it was because there were only 3 entries. Calpurnia also tastes coca-cola for the first time, and is intrigued at how it tastes. Also, because of the smoke in the tent, Calpurnia faints when she gets out. The fair is a very important place in the story because there are lots of things that happen during the fair.

“There was a full day's work to be done before noon, when the deadly heat drove everyone back into our big shuttered house and we lay down in the dim high-ceilinged rooms like sweating victims.” (1)

This quote explains where most of the story takes place, Calpurnia and her family’s house. It shows the reader that Calpurnia's house is very busy with a lot of work to be done, and they are very wealthy. Calpurnia spends most of her time at her home in the library with her grandfather, and in the kitchen cooking with her mother.

“She sat before her board, receiver around her neck, eating apples and reading the newspaper until the board buzzed with a call to be relayed.” (210-211)

This quote shows how as time went on, girls started to get jobs and many new inventions were popping up. The telephone operating room was one of the first jobs girls could have. It shows the reader that the times were changing quickly, and the world was going to change a lot. This setting affects the characters because it makes other girls feel like they can have a job one day like the girls who are telephone operators.
