Buzzy has reportedly been used to block pain for over 31 million needle procedures. Buzzy makes use of cold and vibration in order to replace pain. The Gate Control Theory is that basis for the creation of Buzzy. When nerves receive non-invasive methods to receive non-painful signals such as cold or vibration, the human brain immediately closes pain signals. The second reason why Buzzy works so well is because of Descending Noxious Inhibitory Control (DNIC) which allows the body to block out pain signals in a different area of the body. Overall the cold sensation paired with the vibrating stimulation allows there to be a raise in the body's overall pain threshold.

As a current Surgical-Trauma ICU nurse, I, myself deal with needle procedures on the daily. Whether it may be placing an IV, providing shots (heparin, insulin, tigan, etc), placing a central line, etc., all of these methods listed cause some sort of pain to the patient. Buzzy provides a convenient non-pharmacological method to relieving pain within 15-30 seconds of applying the device. I work in a very fast paced environment, where there an immense stressors from both the patient and faculty. Needles have always been one of the biggest stressor for most of the patients I have dealt with. Introducing Buzzy to my unit would be a life changer. This small little device will inevitable lead to a stronger rapport and trust between the patients and the nurse and overall provide a non-opioid method of providing pain relief.
