The Age of Anxiety

My group partner and I are working on the topic of anxiety inducing music. I want to start out by defining the concept of anxiety, a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. The key words in this definition are that feeling of unease, worry, and uncertain outcome. Sometimes we are quick to judge music because they make us feel some of these emotions. In our essay we will discuss the reason why we tend to dismiss certain pieces as bad music simply because we can't relate to it. Here I will discuss 2 musical examples of which can be classified as anxiety inducing. I will discuss the music based on the judgment of uncertainty and the seemingly outcome leading to nowhere. To the left I will discuss the song The Prodigy - Firestarter and to the right I will discuss the song Burial: Spaceape ft. Spaceape.

"Uneasiness"

This song can be described as complete chaos and confusion. No matter how hard I tried I could not break concrete meaning or purpose to the song. Given the poor lyrical composition I decided to tackle the musical aspect of the song. I found that the opening section of the song introduces an important musical element. It introduces a low frequency electronic sound that remains constant throughout the song. This sound resembles that of a heartbeat. This constant heart beat creates a powerful illusion with the rest of the musical elements because its slow and calm contrary to the percussion which picks up the past again and again. The constant heart beat gives out a sense of sanity in a scene of insanity and because of this illusion the listener may experience uneasiness and confusion.

Road to nowhere?

This song is actually quite intresting because it manages to push through the anxiety but through a different approach. For example the seems to lead no where. There is no purpose to the song. The lyrics lead no where and have no musical rhythm to them. The entire song is the same rhythm looped over and over, mimicking insanity. The performer or in other words the voice in the song is an man speaking in a low pitch voice in a raspy whisper which just adds to the already existing confusion within the song. All in all this song is just uncomfortable to listen to because it seems that the performer is having a direct conversation with the listener, although his message is not pleasant. On the contrary, the message from the performer is quite unpleasant and disturbing. This will without a doubt give some people anxiety.
