His teachings continue to inspire yoga teachers, spiritual seekers, and health practitioners.

Every year, yoga practitioners remember his contribution during yoga events and spiritual programs, especially around International Day of Yoga.

Conclusion

Patanjali is called the first yoga guru because he organized and explained the ancient practice of yoga in a systematic and meaningful way. Through the Yoga Sutras and the Eight Limbs of Yoga, he provided a complete path for physical health, mental discipline, and spiritual growth.

B. K. S. Iyengar was one of the most influential yoga teachers in the world. Through his unique teaching methods, books, institutes, and international demonstrations, he helped transform yoga from an ancient Indian practice into a global movement. His contribution made yoga accessible to people of all ages, cultures, and physical abilities.

B.K.S. Iyengar was born on 14 December 1918 in Bellur, Karnataka, India. As a child, he suffered from several illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis, and malnutrition. His brother-in-law, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, introduced him to yoga to improve his health. Through regular practice, Iyengar regained strength and became deeply devoted to yoga. His personal transformation convinced him that yoga could improve the lives of people everywhere. This belief became the foundation of his mission to spread yoga globally. B.K.S. Iyengar created a special style of yoga known as “Iyengar Yoga.” This method focused on:

Precision and correct body alignment

Discipline and concentration

Step-by-step learning

Safe practice for beginners

He introduced the use of props such as belts, blocks, ropes, chairs, and blankets. These props helped elderly people, injured individuals, and beginners perform yoga poses safely and effectively. Because of this innovation, yoga became accessible to millions across the world.

Iyengar traveled to many countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and South Africa. He conducted workshops, lectures, and yoga demonstrations. His clear teaching style impressed students and health experts alike.

Many international students learned directly from him and later opened yoga centers in their own countries, helping his teachings spread rapidly.

One of the biggest reasons for his worldwide fame was his famous book Light on Yoga. Published in 1966, it explained yoga postures with detailed instructions and photographs. The book became known as the “Bible of Modern Yoga” and was translated into many languages.

He also wrote books such as:

Light on Pranayama

The Tree of Yoga

Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

These books educated people worldwide about yoga philosophy, breathing techniques, and healthy living.

In 1975, he founded the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, Maharashtra. Students from all over the world visited the institute to study yoga under his guidance. Certified Iyengar Yoga centers were later established in Europe, America, Asia, and other regions. These institutes maintained high teaching standards and preserved the authenticity of his method.

Iyengar showed that yoga was not only spiritual but also beneficial for physical and mental health. Doctors and researchers studied his techniques for treating back pain, stress, asthma, and other health conditions.

His method gained respect in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and wellness programs. This scientific acceptance helped yoga gain popularity among people who earlier viewed it only as a religious practice.

The worldwide popularity of Iyengar Yoga happened because:

It was systematic and easy to learn.

Props made yoga accessible to everyone.

His books reached international audiences.

His teachings combined physical fitness with mental peace.

Growing interest in health and stress management increased demand for yoga.

His students created global yoga communities and training centers.

B.K.S. Iyengar received many honors for his contribution to yoga, including:

Padma Shri

Padma Bhushan

Padma Vibhushan

He was also listed among the world’s most influential people by international magazines and organizations. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest ambassadors of Indian yoga and culture.
