Mrs. Sental
Sental
Period 1
5 December 2016

In the novel, The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, we learn that heroes do not always take the traditional form. Greasers, for example, are viewed very negatively throughout the novel--they are almost seen as anti-heroes in their community--however, when Ponyboy and Johnny save the children from the burning church, the children’s teacher tells Pony that he thinks that Pony, Johnny, and Dally are “the bravest kids [he has] seen in a long time” and that they were “sent straight from heaven” as “professional heros” (Hinton 94). Ponyboy is completely shocked by this statement and feels the need to clarify that he is a greaser. He does this because he has come to see greasers as incapable of being viewed by the world as heroes, but this statement made by this unassuming stranger makes it clear that anyone, even a greaser, can be a hero under the right circumstances.

Alexis Narine
Sental
Language Arts 7
December 2, 2016

In the novel "The Outsiders", S.E. Hinton, the characters have to make important choices. In chapter 12, Johnny writes that he thinks that "it's worth saving those kid" and that "their lives are worth more than [Johnny's.]" Ponyboy also realizes that, " even as the policeman's guns spit fire into the nights, that was what Dally wanted." "He was dead before he hit the ground, but I knew that was what he wanted." When Johnny wrote in "Gone With the Wind" he was talking about how he didn't regret saving those kids, because he would do it again. He made the choice to help save the kids even though he knew he could get hurt. He wanted those kids to live because their lives were more important. They still had time to live their lives. And he died for those children. When Pony is talking about Dally, Pony is saying that, Dally couldn't stand losing Johnny because Johnny was the only one Dally ever loved. He did not think that he should live if it wasn't with the one person he loved. Dally wasn't ready to give Johnny up and he thought it was his fault, he blamed himself. Sometimes the right choices are not the best for you, but you do them anyway.

On page 145 when it is announced that the Greasers have won the rumble, it was sticking together and helping one another fight that helped them win. During the rumble, it is announced that Dally was getting the worst of it and being beaten badly. Ponyboy helps him out by "[jumping] on his Soc's back, pulling his hair and pounding him" (Hinton 144). Without Ponyboy's loyalty to Dally and essentially saving him from possible critical injuries, Dally could have been severly injured or at worst, could have died.

Kate Porcello
Mrs. Sental
Language Arts 7
December 5, 2016

In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, we see that stereotypes can influence what a person thinks about who they are, and what they can become. In the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy believes that since he is a Greaser he can not become anything better than greaser, in the future. The stereotype that Greasers will always be worthless, greasy haired boys, is shown throughout the book. Even when Pony, “[Doesn’t] want to be a hood, [and] even if [he doesn’t] steal things and mug people and get boozed, [he’s] still marked lousy” (Hinton 132). Throughout the book, Greasers are viewed as hoodlums and kids or teenagers who cause trouble in the neighborhood. Ponyboy feels restricted to this stereotype, making him feel like he can never become something better, something different than a Greaser. In the end, Pony learns that stereotypes cannot hold him back from becoming what he is striving to be.

Aidan LaChac
Mrs. Sental
Language Arts 7
December 5, 2016

In S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, the characters had to be loyal. However, this loyalty was very hard, for it required some to stray from their own groups and help the other, and be loyal to the good of all. The Soc Cherry, for instance, shows devotion to the peace off all. A remark from the greaser Dally about her was, “‘She said she felt that the whole mess was her fault… and that she'd keep up with what was comin' off with the Socs in the rumble and would testify that the Socs were drunk’”(Hinton 73). She was willing to give information to the other ‘side’ and testify against her own. This shows that she is loyal to the good of everyone, and to peace between the greasers and Socs. All in all, true loyalty is not just to your own group or side, but to the good and well being of everyone.

Uma Attreya

Mrs. Sental

Language Arts Period 7

December 5, 2016

In the novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, we learn that though people can be divided due to socioeconomic differences, they are all just people who inevitably must come to terms with love, sorrow, and hardships that may take different forms. But, due to stereotypes, they cannot express thoughts on the matter. Pony develops as a character, and though this development he learned that there are two sides. Cherry Valance, a Soc, insists that the high class Socs were always on never ending chase to seek something that would satisfy them, and Pony, the narrator, a Greaser, insists that they have their own problems of being jumped by Socs and being the lower class hoodlums of society. The two gangs have a bitter rivalry that stems from these drastic differences. But, on the other hand, they are, under their madras or jeans, just the same people with different experiences; it is just that this thought was not shared due to the said differences. This is clear as Pony, when having a conversation with Cherry on seeing good sunsets, found it funny that the sunset he saw from the back steps and the sunset she saw from her patio were the same. The two people are just trained to think that their two respective groups are different in any and every way, instead of embracing the similarities they ignore them. Later on in the novel, when Cherry speaks to Pony after stating the rules of the rumble, she admits that she cannot visit Johnny in the hospital because he killed her boyfriend Bob. She explains that the Greasers know the one side of the Socs who are numb to emotions, unlike the Greasers. She feels that she cannot be loyal to either side, because they have their flaws, and she hints that Bob the Soc is kind of similar to Dally the Greaser. Cherry does not voice her thoughts, but it can be assumed that she believes they are all somewhat similar. The conversation does become tense, due to Pony being loyal to his gang and Cherry to her neutralism. Pony, to alleviate the tension and prove his point, asks if Cherry can see the sunset good from the West Side. Cherry responds, saying that the sunset is real good there. Pony, who has finally sorted out his thoughts on both classes quietly states, “‘you can see [the sunset] good from the East Side, too’” (Hinton 110). Though it may appear that Pony is having a conversation about the sunset, he is actually conveying the theme of everyone just being people. With Cherry, a high class girl, saying the sunset was visible on the rich side of town, and Pony responding by saying he sunset was equally visible from the poor part of town, it is evident that though these two people are different, though they live on opposite sides of town and are prone to support their class over the other, they are internally just two teens stuck on the weird side of problems.

A person holding a balanced scale shows that everyone, namely Socs and Greasers in this case, are equal in the sense that they are just people.

He would get into fights on purpose and carry a gun. So, when Dally died he died in an act of violence. He teaches us that we should not live like him because in the end the violence will come back at you. If you live by the sword you die by the sword.

In the novel The Outsiders S.E. Hinton depicts a theme of violence. Johnny and Pony are simply taking Cherry home when the Socs find them immediately eyeing their target. After dropping off Cherry, Johnny and Ponyboy begin to walk to their destination and a group of Socs approach them, “[one] Soc caught [Pony’s] arm and twisted it behind [his] back, and shoved [Pony’s] face into the fountain” (Hinton 56). Hinton is creating an atmosphere with violence and where the Socs are doing terrible things to possibly kill the boys. Just that Pony said they twisted his arm and shoved his face into the fountain makes this scene ever so violent. This scene is showing how violent these two social classes can be. Everyone needs to remember violence doesn't always fix your problems.

Mrs.Sental
Language Arts 7
December 5, 2016

In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton violence plays a big roll. The greasers always get jumped by the Sochs. (Pony) almost got killed from getting drowned, "the next thing I knew I was lying on the pavement beside the fountain, coughing water and gasping"(Hinton 56). Also at the end of the book The greasers and Sochs had huge rumble. Darry was very suprised because The Greasers have beat the sochs.“‘We won.’ Darry announced in a tired voice…’We beat the Socs’”(Hinton 145). To concleud this shows how violence is a big theme in The Outsiders.

Spencer Boreham

Mrs.Sental

Language Arts

December 6th 2016

In "The Outsiders" by S.E Hinton violence plays a big part in the novel. An example is when Johnny kills Bob. For example, Johnny says "I killed him, I killed that boy" This demonstrates violence because he stabbed him but, he only did it because David was drowning Ponyboy, and he wanted them to flea. Johnny used violence towards the socs as self defense and saving Ponyboy as a result of them using violence.
