For Christians, heaven is the place of total, eternal happiness in the presence og God, when all believers are aware of the love of God for each individual as well as for the whole community. In heaven, the absorbing love of God removes all cares and worries. All people rejoice that they are in the love of God.

The traditional image of angels playing harps on the clouds of heaven is trying to capture this idea of beauty, freedom and total absorption in the love and praise of God. Heaven is the reward for those who have lived by God's love and guidance.

Christians believe that God is loving and so wants all people to join in the happiness of heaven. However, this can only happen when people choose to accept God. God cannot and will not force people to be happy in heaven. God's love respects the free choices of each individual.

For Christians, hell is the state of separation from God. Those people who choose to reject God, who harden their hearts to his love and forgiveness, choose to live for all eternity without God in their life. They remain in a state of spiritual darkness, aware of what they have willingly thrown away, and unwilling to accept anything from God.

Christians believe that God does not damn people to hell. Those in hell have damned themselves in their failure to recognise and accept God. God does not want people to be in hell, but respects the choices individuals make. God has given every person free will and that means that some people will choose to reject God. God accepts that this is the price to pay for creating people who are free.

Those in hell remain for eternity with a sense of frustration and an awareness of what they have thrown away. The traditional picture is to show hell as a place of endless burning. It is possible to see this as an image for the self-inflicted frustration and anger that people in hell experience.
