I worked with fifth graders at Highlands Elementary School. According to the demographics, most students are multiracial. I plan to work with students so they can gain more understanding of the math skills they are learning, while also providing them with extra lessons on their iReady program so they can practice those skills.

Some challenges that I came across is that some of the low students simply did not want to be at school. This would play a major role when I was trying to teach them how to divide a different way. They were constantly giving up and not even trying to understand the new area model method. Eventually, I got them to start to understand and then they got excited because they knew they could do it and it slowly started to turn around.

Some lessons that I learned would be that when students do not understand how to do a standard by the book, you have to come up with different ways to help get the student to understand. Another lesson I learned was that when you are trying to help students that simply do not want to learn how to do the work, you have to be persistent, until they try the skill and are able to understand it.

I feel that I had a huge impact with the students I worked with. I had some challenges, but they were able to understand the lesson in the end. While they might not know it, they also had an impact on me. When you see everything click and watch them smile when they finally understand how to do a problem that they did not think they were ale to do, it's truly rewarding.

I went online and found a new method to teach the students, I taught them how to do an area model to better understand dividing. This was slightly challenging in the beginning because it took them awhile to grasp the concept on how to do it, because they had never done it that way before. But as we practiced, more kids were starting to understand. These kids needed more push to do the work, and it wasn’t that they were not smart enough to do it, it was just that they didn’t want to. When they did start to understand though, it was so rewarding to watch their little faces light up when they got the right answer. It reminded me why I was there, and the satisfaction of seeing them get so excited because they got it right. There was some frustration when I was trying to teach them because they simply did not want to be at school. But as time went on, they started to get the hang of it and I was able to check off my first SMART goal! When the students took a quiz on dividing only two students in the class got below a 70%, so although not everyone got a 70 or above, it was still pretty close. Another goal I had was to create iReady folders for the students, so they would know what they had to work on online. I completed those in two hours and the students were already able to use them the next day. This helped them in a major way because they could do the work and then after they completed it, they had the satisfaction of crossing it off the list, which would help give them a positive attitude to keep doing the work because they were getting close to the end. I’ve had a wonderful experience and it was so nice to watch the kids really start to understand and actually want to learn because they knew that they already got one right, so they could do more.
