- The Great Depression caused millions of people to be jobless and move around the country looking for work

Major Characters - George, Lennie, Slim, Candy,
George- Is care-taker of Lennie, quiet,insightful man, promised Lennie's aunt he'd taker care of her nephew, and gets the two jobs at ranches
Lennie- Is a very big man, a bit mentally slower than the rest of the characters in the book, and ends up ruining the jobs George gets for them.
