Here is an informal email sent to Sandy from a friend at work......

The class then took the email and using the same ideas re-wrote it as a formal email to Sandy.

Imagine that Sandy 1 is a friend at work....Imagine Sandy 2 is a more formal colleague and the email must reflect formality.

Take a look at Sandy 2 and see how the class transformed the informal email into a formal email; it should give you some ideas on how to phrase certain sentences informally and formally - a very important part of the Aptis test.

Here we have a very formal email Reginald sent to his manager after he recieved an email stating that he was being made redundant...here Reginald has replied very formally...however...Reg 2 works in a small coffee shop and has just gotten an email saying that his boss no longer needs him! Oh no!!

The class then took this very formal email and had some fun constructing an informal version of it....that I found was the key...the informal email can be fun...play with words and phrases...take a look at Reg 2 one and Reg 2 two to see what they did. Again this should give you some more ideas of informal and formal register.

Here you can see how the teachers of SK Serian came up with some informal ways of saying the same things! Great fun hahaha!

A huge list of informal and formal vocabulary..errrr...you can ignore the Vietnamese though....you won't need that part...

Taken from an IELTS PDF on line. There are Vietname translations that you won't need! The rest might come in handy....just choose a few to memorise perhaps..
