Cookies are small files which are stored on a user's computer. They are designed to hold a modest amount of data specific to a particular client and website, and can be accessed either by the web server or the client computer. This allows the server to deliver a page tailored to a particular user, or the page itself can contain some script which is aware of the data in the cookie and so is able to carry information from one visit to the website (or related site) to the next

A cookie work as follow:
A user opens a web browser and selects a site to visit. The user's computer sends a request for information to the computer running at the web site. The web site computer is called the server, since it allows the user's computer to display the web site. At the same time it sends a cookie - a data file containing information like an encrypted user ID and information about when the user visited and what he did on the site. The user's computer receives the cookie and places it in a file on the hard drive. Whenever the user goes back to the web site, the server running the site retrieves the cookies to help identify the user.
