In the Dutch colony, there was a lot of freedom for everyone compared to the British colonies, more specifically women. The Dutch and British colonies quickly became enemies. After three wars, the British eventually won and the Dutch were overruled. The Dutch then moved their colony to the Caribbean.

  • The Dutch were originally in New York and were surrounded by British colonies 
  • Location led to Dutch being driven out by British to the Caribbean 
Religion
  • The Dutch were not strict about religion, welcomed just about anyone
  • Complete opposite of British

Location- 
  • Both the Portuguese and British Set up their colonies in America, however Portugal colonized mostly parts of South America like Brazil, while the British colonized in North America and set up the 13 colonies. 
  • The Portuguese came across Brazil on accident in order to avoid contrary winds and currents. They ended up valuing it for its gold and silver, so they claimed it for Portugal.
  • British came to colonize in the americas mostly for religious freedom.

Religion -
  • While the Portuguese were Catholic, the British were mostly Protestant. 
  • The British were not tolerant in comparison to the Portuguese. 
  • However, they both tried to convert people to their religion

Economy and Slavery- 
  • The Portuguese exported a lot of natural resource in Brazil back to Portugal.
  •  In order to get those natural resources, they used the Native Americans as manual labour but eventually that stopped.
  • They started the transatlantic slave trade by importing their new manual labour forces
  •  4 million slaves were brought to South America, 10 times the amount in North America
  • They were a lot more brutal with their slaves than the British were. 
  • a lot of the manual labor used by the Portuguese was for sugarcane while the British used it for tabaco.
  • they both made money and strengthened their economy this way.

  • Both had very profound religious beliefs.
  • British were mostly Protestant whereas the French were mostly Catholic
  • Both tried to convert natives to their religion.
  • French did not allow people in their colonies with different religious beliefs.
Trade -
  • Both colonies heavily relied on trade to make profit.
  • French developed a heavy fur trade with the native Americans whereas the British focused more on cash crops, lumber and food export, and built ships.
  • French dealt more with natives and natives therefore trusted them more and want with them later in war.

Government -
  • Both colonies had governments developed in new land
  • The English established colonial assemblies and gathered themselves whereas the French had a straight Monarchy with little to none self government.

  • The Spanish acted fast when establishing their first settlement in the New World. It was established in 1493 and was called Hispaniola.
  • The British established their first settlement in 1607. It was called Jamestown.
Similarities
  • Both colonizations had a main motivation for conquering. They wanted to achieve noble status. 
  • They also wanted to increase natural resources for their settlements and expand their claimed territory.
  • They both ravaged the native population and culture.
  • They both established plantations in the New World.
Differences
  • Spain was quick to start exploring the New World. The British waited until beating the Spanish Armada until they started exploring.
  • The British ravaged the native cultures but nowhere near as bad as the Spanish. The Spanish forced the Natives to convert to Catholicism.
  • The Spanish focused and built upon the existing plantation styles. They used the help of African and sometimes Native slaves. Tobacco produced high profits for the British. It also set the South’s position in America as the agricultural sector.
Historical Significance 
  • The Spanish colonies in the New World were significant because a lot of them were established very fast and had lasting effects on the culture. It highlights the common heritage the Unites States shares with Spain.
  • The British colonies in North America were mainly business ventures. They provided an outlet for England’s surplus population and more religious freedom.
