During this stage a child either builds a sense of trust in the world or a sense of mistrust. The first stage occurs during the first 18 months of life. According to our reading "consistent caregiving is the key to successful resolution to this crisis.". I believe I resolved this stage and reached a feeling of trust. My mother has always been available to help me and encourage a feeling of trust. I believe my needs would have been met to the best of my mothers ability creating a feeling of trust.

The second stage is titled autonomy versus shame and doubt. During this stage a may begin to develop a desire to make their own choices. A child may begin to choose which toys to play with or what to wear. This stage normally occurs between 18 months and 3 years. Our textbook tells us "In U.S. culture, negativism is a normal manifestation of the shift from external control to self control". I believe I resolved this crisis and reached autonomy. From a young age I was told that I was a very picky eater. I attempted to have a lot of say in the food I ate. I believe this shows a developing autonomy. I have also been told that I liked to run everywhere which demonstrates confidence in myself.

Stage 4; Industry versus Inferiority

The fourth stage is titled industry versus inferiority. This stage normally happens between the ages of 6 and 12. This stage is described as a child's desire to contribute productively to society. It is important during this time that children develop skills which are appreciated by others. I believe I resolved this stage to reach feelings of self worth and industry. Evidence consists of running for student council in the third grade. In the third grade I must have felt confident in my ability to contribute and in my peers to have confidence in myself as well. Our book tells us that "if a child is unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self esteem, they may develop a feeling of low self worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority." I believe that since I ran for student council and continued to run for student council throughout high school that demonstrates a sense of industry.

The fifth stage is titled identity versus identity confusion and occurs normally between the ages of 12 and 20. This stage is focused on a child's ability to determine who they are as a person. Our text book tells us that "adolescents must develop a sense of self". It is important for children during this time to determine who he or she is. I believe that I may still be in this stage or possible am afflicted by identity confusion. Throughout high school I had a lot of confidence about who I am as an individual. However having experienced college and a variety of perspectives I have been reexamining my sense of self. I currently do not have confidence in my identity and may suffer from identity confusion.

The third stage is titled Initiative versus Guilt and occurs normally between the ages of 3 and 6. This stage is described as a child beginning to understand that their desires do not always align with what society approves. This stage is characterized by being determined by the amount a child interacts with others and plays with others. Our textbook says "this conflicts marks a split between two parts of the personality, the part that remains a child,..., and the part that is becoming an adult." From a young age I was always interacting with others. I have three siblings and attended preschool where I regularly interacted with other children. These interactions with others helped me to develop initiative and overcome this stage of development.

This stage is titled intimacy vs isolation and occurs normally between the ages of 20 to 40. This stage is characterized by ones ability and desire to form new lasting relationships with people outside of their family. Our textbook tells us that during this stage "person seeks to make commitments to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption". I do not believe that I have conquered this crisis yet. I have experienced divorce in my life which may have created some commitment issues. I believe that the result of my current long term relationship will greatly impact my development in this stage.

The seventh stage is titles generativity versus stagnation and normally occurs between the ages of 40 to 60. This stage is characterized by ones ability and desire to create an impact which will outlive them. This stage often focuses on either ones family or work. I have yet to reach this stage however I believe my resolution will most likely come from having children. If not from children I hope my work can provide me with generativity. Children provide people with the opportunity to have their legacy carried on through their offspring. Our textbook tells us that this stage is concerned with "establishing and guiding the next generation" I believe having children would provide me with that opportunity.

The last stage is tilted integrity versus despair and normally occurs from the age of 60 until death. This stage focuses on ones ability to accept their life and eventual death. A person may either be content with their life choices or have regrets resulting in despair. Our textbook tells us "elderly person achieves acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death or else despairs over inability to relive life". I believe my resolution to this crisis will greatly depend on my success with the previous stage. I must reach generativity if I wish to also have integrity at the end of my life.
