It isn't the same as creativity. Creativity is the process to which one has original ideas that hold value. However, divergent thinking is a way to that creativity. Divergent thinking asks you to look at things in different ways...to go about the same problem with various interpretations and possibilities to solve/conclude it rather than perceiving in a linear fashion.

My Response

I see the need to adapt to the economy because our society (even on the global scale) revolves around this institution. However, schooling and our way of life is structured in a way that promotes one purpose: to train children and people to work. Though these are just my thoughts, and it potentially won't make any difference in the pedagogical world, but maybe schools need to revisit what their purpose is in order to push for the greatest learning, etc. I personally find that education should prepare those willing to be a part of schools for life. Thus, it doesn't exclude the economical perspective. In fact, this point of view allows for schools to teach its students how to succeed in the economical (employment and financial) world, but also the social aspect of it, the mental, the spiritual, and so forth.

And as for the cultural response, this can be debatable. But regardless, I think schooling should be a place that not only passes down cultural identities, but in a way that promotes inclusion and acceptable of cultural diversity...that celebrates it even.

So in a way, I agree with Ken Robinson that we need educational change based off these two reasons, but I would also modify and question our schools' purpose(s) beforehand. Hopefully that has left you like the following gif.

Now I'm not saying that the way school was structured in the past was wrong because I fondly believe that you have to begin somewhere even if the way it was made isn't the best...yet. And I agree that the system was made to fit its time. However, as times change, the pedagogical system should change as well to fit the needs of our time. It should also advance just as any of our other parts of society has, i.e., our computers, cars, etc.

I absolutely love the idea of divergent thinking and working in collaborative groups. As an English Single-Subject teacher, I think that it is only right to having a variety of ways of looking at a topic because English and literature in itself is so subjective. BUT that is only because literature reflects and essentially mirrors our living world.

Additionally, it is almost impossible to live life without encountering another person. Thus, it only makes sense to teach those in schools to learn to work with others, and learn how to access another person's point of view in a way that expands their thinking and humanity, rather than shutting people out and causing a lot of hatred and more.
