After multiple acts such as the sugar act, tea act, and the stamp act the colonists were at their limit with the British Government. On King's street in Boston the townspeople lined the streets filled with anger and hate after many acts taxing them. The Townspeople were so enraged they threw clubs and chucked snowballs at the Redcoats. In fear of their lives one of the redcoats yelled fire! The soldiers fired there guns killing 5 and injuring 6. This event was widely known because of a famous drawing by Paul Revere titled "The Bloody Massacre." This was a major turning point in the build-up to the revolutionary war as it fueled the colonies with rage after hearing of the heinous crime.

After the Boston Tea Party the British government was outraged with the colonies. Throwing away millions of dollars worth of tea was the limit. The government released a series of acts called the intolerable acts where they made laws. Some of the laws included shutting down Boston Port (Boston Port act). The colonies would not have any of this and met with all 13 representatives for the first time since the Stamp Act. The First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Paine was a writer and thinker who's most famous work was a pamphlet called Common Sense. Common Sense was a book that told members of the 13 colonies that Britain was being unfair and unjust to them. The piece was very persuasive and made many neutralists and many loyalists turn to the Patriots side.

The Continental Congress was a group of 1 person from 12 colonies who gathered to converse about the problem of the intolerable acts. After long discussions about what to do about the intolerable acts the 12 representatives wrote a letter of independence called the deceleration of independence. The declaration said that the 13 colonies were no longer part of the country of England.

Self Government

The colonies experimented with 3 main types of self- government. The types of government were royal, proprietary, and charter. Royal government was a government appointed by the British Crown. First a negative effect because the government is selected by the King the Leaders on not always the best people available. One advantage of using Royal government is that the King may not always choose the best people for the job but he chose people who had some experience and the person was determined fast and efficiently. Charter government was a government where the people were chosen by a charter which assigned different rights and privileges based on wealth. 1 reason this was a bad idea is because the wealthy people have all the power if they wanted to make a law that said that if your income was over a certain amount you would have free school. It makes no sense. Proprietary this government made all the power go to 1 man who owned the property of the whole colony. This colony worked very well or very badly. It worked well when there was a very good property owner who was generous (Pennsylvania). It went very badly when there was a bad leader.(Carolina)
