She works as a maid in a small hotel in the next town over. Because of these struggles in her life, she really values education "mas de otra gente" (more than other people) because she wants Francisco to have more from life. Francisco is a second language learner, but has good command of both languages. He was in this mono-language (English) district since preschool and it shows. He sometimes confuses the two languages or struggles with syntax in sentences, but he has a good grasp of academic English. He really enjoys big meals with them on the weekends and long games of soccer. He likes basketball, though, too, and since his cousins prefer soccer he waits and plays basketball with the kids from his apartments. Francisco's apartments are home to many of our students and many parents speak Spanish-only at home. Francisco's language is common at our school site, but his mother's approach to education is not. Due to culture, most parents stay out of touch with the school as a sign of respect as they hold teachers up as the professionals. Since his mother is working he attends the after school program where he has met a ton of students from other grades and classes. At home he knows all the neighborhood kids!
