I would like to create formative assessments related to our Literacy by Design Curriculum. Naiku will be the source used to create as well as assess students results and interpret data. Naiku is an assessment platform for students and teachers. I believe it is important to understand the unique needs of my students and formative assessments will assist me in this process.

Students are motivated by technology. Most students enjoying using iPads, tablets, and laptops to show what they know, instead of using paper and pencil. With the MCA's being computerized, it is very helpful for them to gain experience using these devices to be comfortable taking assessments.

With the Common Core State Standards being so in depth, students are required to learn a lot of information throughout the school year. The formative assessments will show which standards need reteaching and which standards need enrichment.

i will collect data with these formative assessments using Naiku. I will be able to see student growth during a unit of study or throughout the year. I will also be able to pinpoint areas in which students need more support.

Staff will be involved in the plan by helping to create the assessments on Naiku. They will also analyze the data in PLC's focused on literacy data. Staff will provide feedback about the formative assessments to improve and modify to meet the needs of students. Parents will view the results of their student's assessments throughout the year.

Using Common Core State Standards and the Literacy By Design curriculum, create formative assessments for each theme (16 themes total).
Ask for staff input to improve or modify the assessments.
Manage student list on Naiku and print out student log-in information.
Administer the formative assessment for the first theme using iPads or laptop computers.
View and print results of the formative assessment.
Discuss data at the Literacy PLC to improve instruction, plan reteaching, or plan enrichment.

Students learn differently and it is important to minimize the barriers and maximize learning. The curriculum should provide genuine learning opportunities for each student and formative assessments are a way for students to show what they have learned. Visual learners would be benefited by being able to see the words and/or pictures on the screen and being able to read the words multiple times. Questions could have the option of text-to-speech for students who cannot read the words. Students would be able to click answers instead of writing them on paper which would be helpful for some students.
