He wrote poems, plays and novels, including Baltasar and Bimunda and The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis. His novel Blindness was made into a film in 2008.

The son of rural workers, Saramago grew up in great poverty in Lisbon. After a series of jobs as a mechanic and locksmith, Saramago started working at a publishing house in Lisbon and ended up becoming a journalist and translator.

Before he was a famous author, he worked as mechanic and metalworker.
He most famous work were "ensaio sobre a cegueira", "ensaio sobre a lucidez" ...
He won a nobel prize of literature in 1998.
He had a wife named Izabel and a daughter called Violante.
He died in 18 june 2010 in Tías, Espanha.

In 1947 Violante dos Reis Saramago (his daughter) was born. In 1995 he received one of his most outstanding prizes (Camões Prize and Nobel Prize). He was married twice, aged 87 and died on June 18, 2010 at 12:30 pm at his home located in Lanzorte as a result of multiple organ failure after a prolonged illness.
