Both Kambili's and Jaja's reactions to Papa-Nnukwu's death were expected. It was expected that Kambili would not react strongly on the outside, and that she would feel guilty about the way she saw him as a heathen. It was also predictable when she did not express her grief outwardly. Jaja's reaction was also expected, as he was always more expressive and was not as shy as Kambili when it came to Papa-Nnukwu. It was not surprising when he cried, or that he told Ifeoma that Papa-Nnukwu was "with the others now".

I think Mama’s figurines, Kambili’s painting, and Jaja’s purple hibiscus represent a safe place they all had. Inside their home they are very scared and its a toxic environment because of their father. Mamas figurines were a place she could go to stay calm, as well as Kambili's painting, she felt comfort in it.
