Parents have the right to be worried about what their kids read. And them taking action along with the schools was perfectly right with the idea of keeping everyone safe and away from any bad ideas or harmful effects the book might give off. I do believe that this book is definitely not something I would think someone under the age of 11 should be reading. However, I also agree with the people who suggest that the book can be helpful in a way. This book could possibly encourage people to speak up about their own problems and seek help. I believe many of the adults and parents genuinely wanted what was best for their kids and students and they really worried about what effect this book would have on them. Everyone of course was well aware of the freedom of speech but when majority of people come together as a whole to ban a book for example, more and likely that book will be banned. Many of the communities sought to ban the book in their school district. The adults were mainly worried that the book created an imagine that somewhat glorified poor mental health. This heavily worried parents and school districts. However, some of the adults felt the book was okay and not as graphic as the show was. And that the book could possibly allow more people (mainly teens) to feel more open about their struggles with mental health. While other parents felt the book was completely inappropriate and a bad influence on children. When I was younger, I felt the book series was scarry and would avoid reading them. So, I can see why adults had that viewpoint of the books having too much graphic and frightening content. But I also agree that maybe the books should not have been banned because kids have a mind of their own. The content in the books were not too severe and definitely could have stayed in schools. If a student felt that the book was too scarry for them then they could just choose to not read the book. One woman who stated that the books were too scarry for kids admitted herself that her own son has not even read the books. So, it is clear that her viewpoint is coming from being personally offended instead of just out of concern for her child and potentially others. But people who shared the common opinion as the principal did in Minnesota, I would think they were coming from a genuine place. At Johnsonville Elementary School in Blaine the Goosebumps series was also a topic of argument on whether to ban the books. But the principal had a different outlook rather than the common reaction of parents to just take action and decide if the books are safe for their kids. The principal brought the idea that if a child feels the book is not safe and positive for them then they won't read the books. And if the child feels they can handle the content within the books, then they might find enjoyment in reading them. They felt it would encourage and persuade children into taking an interest in reading even more frightening and dramatic books. 1997 in Minneapolis Minnesota a parent took action to having the books banned in schools because she felt it was too scarry for children. When the book first came out it did not receive much backlash and even won an award. However, more recently Netflix released a series based on this book in 2017 which started the whole disliking to it all over again. Not too long after the series was released multiple school districts around the country took action to banning the book within their schools. Since the book contained suicide, the curriculum director of Mesa Country School District in Colorado decided to remove the book after a series of suicides. However, later on the book was added back to the curriculum after being reviewed and coming to the conclusion that Netflix made the book seem way more graphic than it actually was. The book was also banned from schools for other reasons such as maturity level and explicit content.
