Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a formation of huge and heavy stones (each weighing approximately fifty tons) arranged in a circular shape. Located 130 km west of London on Salisburg Plain, the massive arches have patiently awaited sunrise every day for the past five thousand years.
This stone circle was carefully constructed so that it would line up with the sunrise on the summer solstice, that is, the dawn of the longest day of the year. On June 21 the sun rises in perfect accuracy under the main stone. As well as aligning, too, the phases of the moon and the winter solstice which is the shortest day of the year. Thus, it could be linked to the agricultural cycle of planting and harvesting as associated with religious rituals.
It is difficult to say exactly what purpose this construction served, but there are numerous assumptions. The most accepted by historians is that Stonehenge served as a solar calendar, demonstrating that the men of the Neolithic period had advanced astronomical knowledge.

Christmas Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

For the cookies:

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened to room temp
1 cup sugar
1 large egg, slightly beaten
3 tablespoons whipping cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (can substitute almond extract)

For the icing:

1/3 cup Crisco (trans fat free), or a 1/3 cup softened butter
1 pound powdered sugar
About 1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cookie Decorations:

Sprinkles
Sugar pearls
Decorating pens

Method

Make the cookie dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat together the softened butter and sugar until creamy. Mix in the egg and vanilla, followed by the whipping cream. With the mixer on low speed, mix in the flour mixture just until no more dry streaks of flour remain.
Roll out and chill: Divide the dough two. Roll each half out between two sheets of parchment paper. (The parchment makes this sticky dough easier to roll out and the dough also chills more quickly.) Transfer the sheets of cookie dough, still sandwiched between parchment, to the fridge. (Place on baking sheets if neeDed so you can balance the sheets on top of other items in your fridge.) Chill for at least one hour or up to overnight.
Heat the oven to 400°F.
Cut out the cookie shapes: Peel off the top layer of parchment from one of the sheets of cookie dough. Use cookie cutters to cut out the cookie shapes. If the dough gets too soft, chill it in the refrigerator for 5 to 10 minutes before continuing.
Bake:
Transfer the cookies to a parchment or silpat-lined cookie sheet. Bake 5-8 minutes at 400°F. Remove the cookies from the oven as soon as you see them turning color at the base of the cookie. Let cool completely. Repeat with remaining batches of cookies. You can also gather the scraps, roll them out again, and cut more cookies.
Make the icing:
In a stand mixer or with a hand mixer, beat together Crisco or butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. If your icing is too thick to spread evenly, add tiny amounts of milk and thoroughly mix until the icing is the consistency you prefer. Separate into different bowls, add food coloring to achieve various colors.
Decorate: Spread the icing onto the cookies with a butter knife or an offset spatula. Use piping bags to add decorative accents, if desired. If you want the sprinkle decorations to stick directly on the cookie, brush the cookie with clear Karo syrup and then sprinkle.

In this room you can find first editions, editions signed by the authors, rare books and current editions of luxury books. Valentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day, holiday (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. Given their similarities, it has been suggested that the holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I forbid the celebration of Lupercalia and is sometimes attributed with replacing it with St. Valentine’s Day, but the true origin of the holiday is vague at best. Valentine’s Day did not come to be celebrated as a day of romance until about the 14th century.
Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness. Other accounts hold that it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, for whom the holiday was named, though it is possible the two saints were actually one person. Another common legend states that St. Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war. It is for this reason that his feast day is associated with love.
Formal messages, or valentines, appeared in the 1500s, and by the late 1700s commercially printed cards were being used. The first commercial valentines in the United States were printed in the mid-1800s. Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion. Because it was thought that the avian mating season begins in mid-February, birds also became a symbol of the day. Homemade Oreo ice cream

Ingredients:
1 can of condensed milk
3 packs of cream
1 package Oreo

Preparation method:
1º- Whip the cream until stiff;
2º- Add condensed milk;
3º- Add the crushed Oreo cookies and mix well;
4º- Take to the freezer for 5 hours.
