Week 1: Creating a Positive Classroom Environment

At the beginning of the year to break the Ice I have all students in my classes from 6-12th grade create an All about me beaker. I have students present their beakers to the class. This helps me as the teacher relate to them and their humor, likes, and dislikes, but also allows them to relate to each other. From the oldest students who are often too "cool" to participate to the youngest, too shy they all seem to enjoy this activity as it establishes a more relaxed classroom environment. Above Is my example of the all about me beaker as I present myself first to lead by example. When students get to know a little more about myself as a person they also get more comfortable sharing about themselves as well. This is the beginning which allows us to build rapport in the classroom

Best way to foster students relationships and a positive environments is to have students interacting with each other. In my AP Biology class having students complete a lab task with defined roles in groups tends to have students actively participating and positively engaging in learning. Here you can see students working with partners at lab tables to complete a photosynthesis and oxygenation lab using floating disks technique.

The best way to assess knowledge is application. Students in my experimental science class had been learning about wound care and suturing techniques. Finally their skills were put to the test as they practice basic sutures through a workshop I developed using kits and oranges to simulate human skin. It was evident that they were able engage with each other and challenge themselves as a result. Definitely an enjoyable activity. Attached is a picture of one of my students practicing the simple suture for his practical grade in the course

To engage in social and emotional learning I sometimes engage in a check in with students. Here displayed is a gallery walk I placed sentences around the room where students must complete their answers on sticky notes and we will discuss as a class. Some of the sentence examples are "What activities do you need more of to help you succeed in the classroom?"; "How do you feel about science and why?"; "What is your favorite thing about school and why?" ; "How are you feeling?"
All sticky notes are anonymous and this is an easy activity to do with my 7th graders when they are moving and pacing ahead of their lessons to throw in as a check in with the class and their state of mind.

Week 5: Identifying and Addressing Disruptive Behaviors

Students are due to support a code of conduct in the school. This code of conduct includes from uniform policies, respect towards others and the school property, and responsibility to follow rules in and outside of the classroom. If students are not able to comply with rules or cause a disruption of sorts as a teacher we are able to report these issues and contact parents using a demerit system. The school create a google form to input student information, behavior details, and report the issue. Once students collect 3 demerits they are due for a detention and as they continue collecting demerits they will propel up the ladder of consequences leading into suspension and eventual expulsion. After each demerit is authorized parents must be contacted the same day a demerit is given. This allows for a flow of communication and allows parents to be involved in the process of discipline.
