Although often seen as robust and unchanging, human nature is an innately corruptible and malleable entity that influenced easily by outside variables. In the text ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare, the nature of the titular character Macbeth was revealed through the use of several language features, such as foreshadowing. Through the exposure of Macbeth’s internal nature, Shakespeare makes interesting commentary on the corrupting quality of ambition and the effects that this corruption has on the individual. Human nature in itself is corruptible in its construction, however the degree of which this consequently impacts the individual is what Shakespeare really ponders through his development of the character Macbeth.

The sign of a truly timeless piece of literature is way way in which a commentary on the nature of society is established, not only relevant to the author's time but society over 200 years later. The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare does exactly this, through the deep psychological analysis fueled by the use of language features such as irony, character archetypes, and symbolism. These techniques are masterfully utilised by Shakespeare to depict the rise and fall of our protagonist Macbeth, and craft an insightful commentary on the weakness of our human tendency to grasp for power and meaning greater than ourselves and the manipulation that this vulnerability leaves us open to.

Although it is easy to expect highly of others and to heavily criticize when they don't meet expectations usually the most difficult is to act on our words and follow the rules we set for other people. Hosseini intentionally utilizes irony throughout the text to reveal the hypocritical nature of Baba which is relevant to present society on how members of society, especially parents, educate others when they can't necessarily behave in the same way themselves.

In Shakespeare's play Macbeth we see how symbolism through the use of clothing is used to portray the darker nature that settles around Macbeth as the play progresses. The use of clothing shows us how the perception of someone who we deem not worthy can be altered to fit our own ideas, and how the way we are on the inside can also alter our appearance to the outside world.

In the novel The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini, the use of symbols such as sacrificial lambs efficiently encourages the reader to see the character of Amir’s nature as being selfish and cowardly.

In the comprehensive film of “Atonement”, directed by Joe Wright, colour was used thoroughly throughout the text as a technique to help reveal particular aspects of Briony’s nature, specifically her desire for attention and recognition. This valuable technique was molded by Wright as an attempt for the audience to understand his complex reasoning behind it. The revelation of Briony’s nature in the film could identify as an example of how colour can be combined with simple connotations, such as the colour of red being linked with guilt (and past sins) and therefore, have a deeper meaning overall.

As living beings we have an innate need to put ourselves first, but sometimes this can go too far. In the novel "The Kite Runner" the author Khaled Hosseini uses symbolism, characterization and foreshadowing to reveal and develop the character Amir's selfishness and cowardice. Hossieni explores how different events in our lives can cause us to put ourselves over others but also how other natural emotions like empathy can make us better people.

In order to save ourselves we often believe that sacrificing others, even at the extent of harming our closest friendships is our way of ensuring self preservation. In the skilfully crafted novel, ‘The Kite Runner,’ by Khaled Hosseini, the author cleverly reveals the character of Amir’s nature through conveying themes such as how we tend to deal with our guilt by avoiding it, and as a consequence we end up being confronted with it. The techniques of symbolism, imagery and foreshadowing are employed by the author to display this theme and help us gain a deeper understanding surrounding the nature of our own character and those around us.

Overall it seems that Shakespeare wants to use this exposure of Macbeth’s corrupted nature, through the use of language features, as a means of exposing the innate corruptibility inside every human being. It would be antediluvian practice for the human race to deny its collective corruptibility and the genius of the commentary of Shakespeare in ‘Macbeth’ is that this aspect of human nature is able to transcend through time to become even more relevant now than it perhaps was in the Elizabethan era society that Shakespeare experienced. While aiding central thematic and theological debates on the damnation of human beings as decided by their choices, Shakespeare has inadvertently laid a tapestry of truth moving forward into the future; as the collection of outside variables that may lead to the corruption of humanity as a whole expands, what can collective society do to prevent the corruption of human nature and preserve the very aspects that define our own humanity?

Khaled Hosseini skillfully comments on the lengths people go to rid themselves of feelings of guilt and how that can make us better people. When Rahim Khan says to Amir "come there is a way to be good again" this is an offer Amir cannot refuse as his need to atone for his selfish past overrides his need for self preservation which drove his decisions as a young boy. "The Kite Runner" is worth studying as teaches us that guilt at our wrong doings is a good thing as it is

Through 'The Kite Runner', Hosseini has clearly demonstrated the impact of childhood events on the development of one's character. Language features through Amir were used to show how memories can last a lifetime and that upbringing and environment plays a great role. The idea of decision making that is due to Amir's weak and cowardice nature also showed the importance of upbringing and how everyone has different values.

The use of the symbol of a lamb reveals to the reader that the author’s purpose was showing how most people grow up being taught subconscious thoughts about inferiority and superiority, however it is how we act on these thoughts that truly reveal one’s nature. Khaled Hosseini expertly crafts the novel using said symbols to prove this to us and directs the reader’s attention to this fact, hence forcing us to acknowledge our own human behavior.

As with most of Shakespeare’s plays, ‘Macbeth’ stands as both an exploration of humanity but also a warning to readers and viewers. The ambition shown by Macbeth, emphasised by Shakespeare’s clever use of language features, showcases to us what might cause a person to commit evil deeds in order to move further in their lives, as well as illustrating the consequences of this. Macbeth’s nature is cause for us to think and reflect upon our own lives and choices - how far are we willing to go to achieve our goals and are we willing to risk our humanity?

Khaled Hosseini has masterfully crafted this text that illustrates to the reader how even with a very similar upbringing, the nature of two individuals can be vastly different. In The Kite Runner Hassan is developed as a character who gives more than he gets. Hassan is a very moral character, and this idea is mirrored with the symbolism of his cleft lip. This poses a question to the reader - how can two people who have gone through life together end up so different?

Khaled Hosseini’s novel, ‘The Kite Runner,’ employs us to think more deeply surrounding what influences our decision making, and be less critical towards those whose character appears to be selfish. This idea is shown through the character Amir’s inability to put others before himself, and as the reader we witness the repercussions of his thinking. Therefore through the elements of language features we better understand as the reader to take a step away from the fray and analyse the situation from different perspectives - not just our own.

Shakespeare’s detailed and crafted use of foreshadowing, imagery and irony all reveal how Macbeth’s nature is eroded by ambition and societal expectations of him, as he is pushed by Lady Macbeth and the Witches’ prophecies to rise to power as Thane of Cawdor. Shakespeare’s use of these techniques criticise the power-hungry society of the pre-Elizabethan Era, a criticism that transfers to modern day society as some question the sanity and suitability of leaders of today’s world.

“The only true test of loyalty is fidelity in the face of ruin and despair.” From Hosseini’s use of symbolism, metaphors and flashbacks, we learn that it is possible to remain ‘good’ even through the darkest of times, you can remain true to yourself even when everyone else turns towards immorality. Hassan’s character is used by Hosseini to reveal this as Hassan is the one charcter throughout the entire novel who remains unchanged, even when tested he stays loyal, honest and caring towards those who he loves. This makes the reader question if this is actually possible in today’s soceity, or has all sense of compassion, loyalty and honnor been lost?

The common language techniques used in extended texts rarely vary, as they often portray an essential proclamation that has the potential to affect personal perception of a text. Noticeably, in the film “Atonement”, directed by Joe Wright, the language technique of the presence of the colour red that was continuously used throughout the film, helped reveal Briony’s particular nature, and how her need for other’s consideration and approval often masked her conscience. Wright’s control over the technique allowed the audience to find personal revelations about the main character. However, was this even Wright’s intention? There could be a possibility that the author himself, wanted the audience to have their own, individual perceptions of this particular language technique.
