In the movie, Joyful Noise, Walter Hill is described as having Asperger's Syndrome. This is a form of autism, typically on the higher functioning end of the spectrum. Walter is verbal without showing many outward signs of having autism(no stims seen). He can be seen in this movie as an active member of his family, church, and community.

- Walter wears sunglasses all of the time because he is sensitive to bright lights.
- He avoids loud activities because he doesn't like loud noises.
- He can not stand to be touched even by his mother.
- Has an obsession with one hit wonders, especially The Left Banke's "Walk Away Renee"
- Walter having Asperger's syndrome is mentioned a couple of times throughout the movie.

If Walter was a student in my classroom, I would set an expectation with my class about the noise level. I would lead by example and use a lower softer tone when I am speaking. I would also have some noise cancelling headphones available for Walter to use when needed.

Because of his sensitivity to light, I would adapt the lighting in my classroom to make a better learning environment for Walter. I would draw shades if I needed to, as well as, only turning on partial lights. I would also purchase light covers for my light fixtures so to dull the brightness.

Walter does not have any outward physical development issues that I can see in this movie.
I also do not notice many cognitive impacts while watching him in this movie. He has a conversation with his mom about how he hates God because he made him this way, so the fact that he can have a meaningful conversation with his mom about an abstract idea as God tells me that he probably has average cognitive development.

In the movie, Walter has a conversation with Randy and says "I am unable to tell when someone is putting me on;" he is aware of his social limitations and has found a way around them by being forward with Randy. I feel like at this point in the movie he is comfortable with Randy and that a blunt conversation like that would be hard for Walter when it is someone that he does not know well.

When Walter gets upset about something he starts talking about one hit wonders. He will often leave the uncomfortable situation. There is a scene when they are talking about their dad being away in the military and instead of talking about his dad he talks about The Left Banke's "Walk Away Renee" song. When his dad is brought up at a lunch he starts belting out the song because he is uncomfortable talking about his dad. He obviously misses him, but does not know how to show that emotion in an appropriate way.

If Walter has trouble staying on task in the classroom or avoids doing school work, I will set up a system to work for and intrinsic reward. Walter would need to get his work done in order to have time to listen to music or earn time to speak to the class about one hit wonders. This can be used in a variety of different magnitudes. He can work for listening independently on a daily basis, but if he is required to do an assignment that is bigger (like a research project) his reward could be showing the class some videos about one hit wonders or performing in front of his class/friends.
