Grant
Confederate- Albert Sidney Johnston
Johnston left after Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February 1862 and gave Kentucky, also to western and middle of Tennessee to the Federals. This allowed Ulysses S. Grant to push his troops to Corinth, Mississippi, and many more to supply conduit for the south. Albert Johnson intercepted the Federals 22 miles northeast of Corinth of Vicksburg. The encounter was devastating because of the number of casualties. After Shiloh both sides noticed the extent of the conflict, which would be longer and bloodier than they expected.
Union Victory
American Battlefield Trust
