I am almost digested, and I am feeling a little empty. Get it? Because I have no more nutrients to give and I am now a waste. It gets kind of lonely when you have no one to talk to, it kind of drives a fish crazy you know? Anyway, lets continue my very depressing story that tragically ends in my death. Whoops I guess I ruined the end of the story for you but what is the point of surprises when you can just spoil the end. As I was saying the large intestine is where waste is built up. Dang I am not even considered bolus anymore I kind of prefer that more because waste makes me feel like I am worthless. I am but like denial. I am now sliding through the large intestine and now through the rectum. I am almost taste freedom, but in a different from of course. The sphincter muscles are now relaxed, and I have been once more returned to the water. It’s kind of hard to swim now with no fins, I kind of feel like a rock, pointless and stupid. But I at least know how my life was ended right? In perfect detail which was said but no one can say how they died in such as great detail as I did.

I now find myself in the small intestine which has 3 parts, first the duodenum. In the duodenum the HCO3 that stipulates pH 8-9 for enterokinase and that makes trypsinogen inactive pancreatic secretin into trypsin, erepsin and pancreatic amylase. Trypsin primary function is to break down the protein which would be me because I am very important. Erepsin then would further break down that protein into amino acids. The pancreatic amylase would break down the starch which is the brown stuff. It’s kind of surprises me how I remembered this much from the bio class, I know that fish have short attention spans, but I guess I do not? My mom always told me I was the fastest fish in the sea, I have never got it until now though. After thinking about all of this it’s kind of helps me forget the crisis that is happening currently, but like procrastination, am I right? More like denial, but not the river in Egypt. Anyway, back to the crisis at hand. The other part of the small intestine is the jejunum and the ileum. Jejunum takes the undigested food partials and transports it to the large intestine. I knew that some of me left, and now I know where it went to. The last part of the small intestine is the ileum which its job is to absorb the bile acids. It is also the thing that is connected to the large intestine, where I am headin to next. This is the last stage where things get gross.

Digestion

As I make my way to the stomach, I am having a full-fledged panic attack, not like anyone would have known or anything like that because I am a bolus no one cares about me other than to use me for their known gain! I guess I was over reacting a little because when I enter the stomach it’s not as bad as I thought it was. The chief cells release the pepsinogen which starts the process of the digestion of me. Pepsinogen is an inactive form of pepsin which it needs hydrochloric acid (HCl) to be activated. To get HCl the parietal cells secrets its which in turn activated the pepsin to be able to break the protein (which is me because I am a fish which is a great source of protein not meaning to show off or anything (insert winking face)). In other facts the HCl has optimal pH for pepsin which is 2-3. When I make my way out of the stomach which I am so thankful for because I am so claustrophobic, and I make my way to the liver.

In the liver bile is produced, more specific bile salts which is needed for lipids to emulsifying them. It did not take to long in the liver until I continued on to go to the pancreas. The pancreas produces pancreatic juices to aid further in digestion with starch, lipid, protein and nucleic acids. Those will affect me the protein, and the brown stuff which the starch and I am not sure about the white stuff, but I guess I will find out soon enough. This secretion then travels to the duodenum which I will be soon after a few more stops. A digestive enzyme called cholecystokinin that delivers a digestive enzyme to the gallbladder. If I thought I was claustrophobic in the stomach, then the gallbladder is terrifying. The gallbladder is used as a storage for the bile that the liver produces and then carries to the duodenum. And to transport this the bile duct is used. I think I have been pretty digested don’t you say? Now I am on my way to be absorbed, yay.

When I came to, I was cut up in small pieces with weird white gooey stuff with other weird looking things. Before I had time to think about anything else, I was being laid on some flat brown stuff then suffocated with some more of it. From what my ancestors have told me and my siblings, I think I was made in to a thing that is called a “sandwich,” (I thought it was weird because there it no sand in it). Just when I though my life has hit its peak of udder torcher, I was being put into a clear thingy and I must have blacked out again because I do not remember anything else after that…

When I woke up again, I was in terrible agony that I would not wish on a shark (even though they do eat my kind). When I was in school before I was taken, I was in my bio class and we were learning about the human digestive system. So, it’s kind of sad how I will know everything that is happening to me when I am digested. When I could see again, I saw white things that looked like sharks’ teeth but not as pointed, I didn’t really care at the moment though because the pain was unbearable. Once the pain subsided somewhat, there was something wet I was being encased in, I think it is mucus to help with lubrication for swallowing; whatever it was gross. After most of me was chewed the flat brown thing (which was no longer flat) that I was wrapped in was being broken down by the salivary amylase. If I remember correctly it aided in breaking down starch when it was chewed, that would mean that the brown thing was a starch, I didn’t even know that. I guess at this stage I am no longer a tuna sadly, I am now referred to as a “bolus” because I am a ball and being swallowed. Now down the esophagus I go! I passed the opening of the glottis which is necessarily protects the trachea from food when being swallowed. At this point I knew I was headed for the stomach, if I though being eaten was bad, this is going to be so much worse.
