A few years later, in 1846, this hostility sparked the Mexican-American War. This war cost the US over $18 million, and caused over 1700 US deaths.</div>]]></description>

This bolstered the U.S. economy and contributed to the United States' growth as an international power. Texas joining the union also prevented it from becoming an enemy state to the US, improving the safety of the US's southern border.</div>]]></description>
