To me, seeing the larger swans swimming close by to the other ducklings represented both a position of authority, therefore my immediate reaction to them was having power. Both the swans and ducks can be heard creating noise within the artefact, and for me, my first thought was they are creating drama! I immediately stared, and imagined their conversation, and wondered whether or not they were speaking a known language amongst one another. I quickly formed this opinion based on the fact that they continued to swim in close proximity to one another. I'm able to make a connection between this and the Aboriginal Soundscape at Healesville Sanctuary since I recall experiencing the exact same thing when listening to the many sounds of nature, and wondering whether or not these were understood. In my own practice I often enjoy quietly listening and exploring nature and it's beauty.

The Gate Keepers

In a way that was significant to me, the rounded poles spoke to me. Due to the fact that they were somewhat higher than the other objects in the area and semi rounded at the top, my first reaction to them was fear. After considering their appearance, I concluded they resembled a Spear, and what a guard might hold when in defence, hence the name 'Gate Keeper'. In my experience, this was the very first obstacle in the 'Journey to Freedom'. As previously stated, looking at these made me feel a sense of being scared, which made me recall my childhood and how many things made me afraid when I probably shouldn't have been. This therefore relates to my practices, as I can emphasise with those children who are more reluctant in their social interactions and being outside their comfort zones, as I was the same when younger.

The Castle

When looking closely at the bush, that was quite large and deeper in colour, my first thought was that it hadn't been cared for due to the coloration. It wasn't until I looked closer, that I realised it was actually growing inside the water. I was then able to see it clearer to recognise it's importance, and the significance it would have within the experience. Immersed in the water, and being in close proximity to the Guards (Swimming swans), I envisioned this as being the 'Castle'. When thinking of a castle, the image that comes to mind is one of being big, dimly lit and dark, which I resonated the bush as being, as well as it's dark shadows. When thinking this, I immediately thought of Bangarra's Mutton Bird and the significance of lights and visions in appreciating and wide range of movements. To further this experience, and my practices as an educator, I would love to allow children's to learn more about the significance of shadows.

Battle with the King of the Castle

Squawking was heard coming from the direction of the King of the Castle (Bird), which was seen and heard in my Artefact. My interpretation of this was that the King was guarding his priceless castle, as he was spotted moving back and forth while making loud noises. When shooting my Artefact, this was my primary focus, and where my attention was based. It seemed to me that the Bird placed a high value on the natural environment surrounding him, almost as if this bush was his safe place. The Bird's cries marked a sense of territory and pride it's in sacred space and land. Through my observations, my thoughts immediately went to the children in my care, and how I might help them develop a deeper appreciation for the animals and their habitats and surrounding natural environments.

Above Audio (Text) :
Here I take you through the my own 'Journey to Freedom'. After being confined Indoors for such a significant amount of time, I at last get the opportunity to break free! Phase One, The Gate Keepers. These were spear-wielding guardians who maintained watch over the area. They stood extremely tall and had a menacing appearance. They generate an immediate feeling of dread in me, sending shivers down my entire body. Being so tall, I made the choice of crawling through, just at the perfect time, as I knew this was their weak time. Phase Two, the Guards. My eyes were set on them. They were much larger than first anticipated, quite tall, largely built and like before, I felt a chill of terror run through my body. I decided to use a bell-shaped object I'd discovered in my underground dwelling all those years ago to divert their attention. Sounds like a bell: "DING DING". I ran one way and flung the bell in the opposite direction. Everything inside of me went into flight mode, and I ran as fast as I could. As I fled, I sensed the Guards following the direction of the sound and abandoning their concealment. This was it! I started, and locked eyes directly at the castle. It's been years since I've had any chance of getting out of here, but here is my chance. Since been away, it had been quite a long time since I'd seen the castle. I approached it stealthily and recalled that it looked very different now. It used to be a deeper shade of grey, but now it's considerably much darker, almost black. And at last. I meet with the Castle's King.
