In most households, we have a small bin in the kitchen for organic waste like e.g. vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells. When it’s full, we empty it into the larger compost bin outside. our parents will always remind us to check what could and couldn’t go in the compost bin, so I quickly learned the difference.

The process is simple but fascinating. Over time, the organic waste breaks down, helped by bacteria and small organisms. In a few months, it turns into rich compost that can be used in gardens and flower beds. All families have seperate organic waste bins in the kitchen and most families in Denmark have their own compost piles and use the soil for homegrown vegetables.

By working in the garden, we experience firsthand the importance of protecting the environment and making healthy food choices. Haver til Maver makes learning fun and gives us valuable skills that we can use throughout our lives!
