Then as a class we'd vote.

So we have "kata" which are patterns we have to memorize with specific movements. We refer to them as our "textbooks" as they have all of the movements and sequences we need for self defense.
Bunkai is studying the application of these sequences. It becomes more complex as you get higher.
But sometimes our teacher gives us a kata and asks us to develop our own bunkai. They will give us say a sequence of 3-6 moves and we need to figure out what they're supposed to be. It's really interesting to see how creative people can get with it.
