I included this photo to reinforce the aspect of human connection. This young girl was at recess when she saw me walk by on my way to the village's main street. There I learned about Vietnamese culture, traditions and way of life. Also pictured is one of the hundred stray dogs I had encountered in Thailand. Through this experience I was able to gain a new perspective on the privileged life I live as well as appreciation of international cultures. I feel very grateful to have made both connections although I could not communicate with either. The theme of my portfolio focuses on human connection which this photo represents; a connection that broke through the language barrier, even for just a minute. In our passing , the young girl and I both chose to be kind and vulnerable with each other. The dog chose to be vulnerable with me allowing me to pet it without knowing if I'm dangerous. I feel content knowing she has her own personal connections and stray dogs are well cared for in this area. The sunglasses on my head remain with her in Vietnam and both connections remain with me.

This excerpt from "Pants on Fire" is the resolution the protagonist has been looking for. This piece of creative non fiction influenced my writing due to its well-articulated nature as well as it's focus on connection and vulnerability.

The main character admits to lying "purely for the ecstasy of it", blocking any form of genuine connection. Rather than continuously lying to impress her peers, being open and vulnerable is what brought the girls closer together. This lead the girls to reveal personal struggles that one may never be able to guess upon first judgment, like the girl she idolized for always having her hair perfectly curled, admitted that her parents couldn't afford a vacation this summer, influencing others to come forward and be honest as well.

This excerpt from "Nothing Extraordinary" by Jennifer Kim refers to a much deeper connection, one between a selfless mother and her privileged daughter. This writing influenced my own by painting a larger picture of what a true connection would consist of.

It is not until the end of the story when the protagonist understands her mother's sacrifices and she is able to make one too. The daughter's emotional vulnerability evokes a sense of appreciation towards her mother allowing for the two to have a more meaningful relationship.

This film, which was the inspiration for my theme, delves into the power of human connection. The film focuses on the unexpected friendship between two contrasting characters. During a powerful key scene the impact of grief and the healing power of empathy is on display. An emotional outburst of a child fueled by grief and frustration, reveals a concealed side of vulnerability. Her nanny's understanding and compassion provides space for emotional growth and the formation of a deeper connection between the two girls, finally bridging the gap separated by their differences and demonstrates the importance of powerful human connection.
