The fire as well symbolizes the current hell that Elie and the other jews are living in. The fire she is talking about is a vision or use of foreshadowing of the horror they are about to see at the crematory of Birkenau. The horrors of the crematory display the symbolism of the fire, and the things that Elie saw at this crematory stuck with him forever.
