At first, I wasn't planning my collage. I was picking images I thought were beautiful and pleasing to me and thought that the combination of these beautiful pieces would some how come together and could be a small representation of me. However, when I got home I wasn't able to piece them together, I worried that I hadn't gathered enough material even though I hadn't used everything I had brought home. I began looking inside my house and that's when I found the Thai illustrations on the bottom left of my collage. That part is what made it all come together. This collage is a bit of a representation of where I come from. My mom being from Thailand, my dad born in a little town in France, and those Californian mountains in the back. In the collage there are dancers and to me it looked like they were celebrating this story of coming together.

One thing that I thought was valuable about today's class was the personal artifact share. My artifact was a necklace that my grandmother has gifted to me one year for Christmas. She has explained to me that my grandfather had gifted it to her after she had given birth to my father. They were in France at this time, because my grandfather was a teacher abroad after the war. I drew a connection to how I'm pursing teaching just like my grandfather was a teacher and how teaching has given me opportunities to travel just like it did them all that time ago. I can see how this activity would be a a fun introductory one to do with my future students.

In regards to the reading for today's class, we had read "Towards an Ethnic Study Pedagogy: Implications for K-12 Schools from the Research" This reading focused primarily on ethnic studies in SFUSD, the case for ethnic studies, examples of student and schools success with it's learning, and suggestions for supporting educators and schools. This reading made me think about the film Precious Knowledge that I has saw in child development class that I was taking at CCSF. In the film, Arizona educators and students were fighting to save their program. While I think the Bay Area and California can do much more to support ethnic studies programs, I also think of other states that fight to keep theirs. Overall, America is a diverse country and schools should value the education of the history and stories of it's diverse peoples.

Something that I learned that was brought up by our guest speaker Dr. Sé Sullivan was on intersectionality. Prior to today's class, I had knew about the term from previous women studies classes that I was in. I knew that because of intersectional identities that people experience this world differently. What was taught today was that intersectionality is a theory, and that people are not anything until they are visible to the other. People are not internalizing intersectionality as if they are strictly that. In systems and structures of visibility, people become intersectional to someone else.

Today in class we had a discussion on the reading, "The Problematics of Ethnic Studies." Something that stood out to me from the reading were the academic disagreements over the meanings and materiality of both race and ethnicity and the readings introduction of different approaches and theorists. My home group had were especially stumped by Johnella E. Butler who was a racial-ethnic theorist and multiculturalist. She had said that people of color are a social category that includes "those who have not and do not assimilate." My group members and I are people who think of ourselves as people of color, so to read that we were conflicted? Do we not somewhat assimilate western culture when we attend their institutions for learning? When we speak their language? Etc. Does that mean we are no longer people of color? Overall, it was a really engaging discussion and I'm still confused trying to understand what some of these theorists were trying to communicate.

Something I learned from our guest speaker, Dr. Sacramento, today was about the Asian American Third World Liberation Front. I learned today that there was a 5 month strike and the movement wanted more representation in the curriculum and students wanted the school to recruit more faculty of color.

I also learned today that the term Asian American came about in the 60s because leaders did not want to use the term "Oriental" as it was heavily associated with pain and trauma.

A quote that Dr. Sacramento brought up that really resonated today was that "Asian American studies should not be based on a critical mass argument the study of Asian American Studies is fundamental to an inclusive American history that must be contextualized within global transformations..." I think that this quote is important because it recognizes Asian Americans stories as significant and relevant to the discourse.

Thank you for reading!

Something that resonated with me about the reading was the significance of community-based organizations and clubs and their impact on youths and preparing young people to address ongoing political and economic disinvestment in their communities.

From my personal experience, I understand how participating in an organization or club is just as valuable as participating in class. Organizations and club help to foster collaboration, help to build community over shared interests and goals, and teaches youths skills and responsibilities.

During my time in high school, I was a youth outreach worker my junior and senior year. My peers and I worked with our campus' wellness center to help give presentations and provide resources to students about our school. I remember going into homerooms and giving presentations on how to put on a condom and chlamydia. The topics were uncomfortable, but the repetition of my work and the importance in the information I provided felt valuable to share to my peers.

Overall, I felt that this reading really connected to my own personal feelings on the topic.

Regarding class today and what a capstone project is, our presenter, Kimberly's capstone was on the topic of menstruation. From what I understand about a capstone so far is that it is a project that synthesizes all the knowledge and skills students learned throughout the school year. I'm assuming that it is usually on a topic of a student's choice.
