Hiram B. Otis, a wealthy American, purchases Canterville Chase, an ancient English manor-house, despite warnings that the house is known to be haunted. Immediately upon arrival, the family is confronted by a bloodstain in a sitting room. The housekeeper explains that the stain has been there since 1575 and is the result of Lady Eleanore de Canterville having been brutally murdered by her husband. The Canterville Ghost is a terrifying ghost who has haunted the Chase family for hundreds of years. But, the more terrifying he tries to be, the more the Otis family either make fun of or ignore him.

Things hit rock bottom when the twins create a fake ghost of their own to scare the real ghost. Meanwhile, Virginia unexpectedly comes across the secret hiding lair of the ghost. The ghost explains his sadness and suffering, telling her that he longs for the peaceful experience of death.

Even though she is frightened, Virginia agrees to help; the two of them pass through a secret opening in the wall and vanish.

When Virginia cannot be found, her family and the Duke Of Cheshire (The one who has fallen head over heels in the beauty of Virginia and hopes to marry her) become very upset. A few hours later, Virginia appears in the dark at the top of the stairs. Her only explanation of her disappearance is that she has assisted in finally bringing eternal rest and peace to the Canterville Ghost. As a token of his thanks and affection, Sir Simon has given her a box filled with jewels. Virginia leads the family into a secret chamber, where they are greeted by the sight of his skeletal remains. Four days later, Sir Simon’s body is finally laid to rest with a proper burial.

Virginia subsequently marries the Duke of Cheshire. The characters in "The Canterville Ghost" by Oscar Wilde are as follows :-



  • Sir Simon Canterville
    He became a ghost after being starved to death by his wife's husband for murdering his wife. He has haunted Canterville Chase for hundreds of years and wont stop until someone is brave enough to give his peace of death.

  • Virginia Otis 
    The only daughter of the Otis family. Unlike the rest of her family, she is afraid of the ghost but still takes pity on Sir Simon after hearing his misfortunes and helps him find peace in the afterlife. 

  • Hiram B. Otis (Mr. Otis)
    T    he new American owner of Canterville Chase, representing modern practicality and consumerism. He is a pragmatic and no-nonsense character, but he also seems to be quite a lenient father since he makes no attempt to discipline his children for unruly behavior towards the ghost who has lived their for hundred years.

  • Lucretia Tappan Otis (Mrs. Otis)
    Lucretia is the wife of Hiram Otis, and mother to Washington, Virginia, and the twins.

  • Duke of Cheshire is a wealthy young English aristocrat who falls in love with, and eventually marries, Virginia Otis.

  • Stars and Stripes (the Otis twins)
    The youngest Otis children are a set of twin boys who are never named in the story, instead referred to as "Stars and Stripes." They spend most of the story tormenting the ghost, and they do not seem to be afraid of him at all.

  • Mrs. Umney
    Mrs. Umney works as the housekeeper at Canterville Chase. She is initially employed by the Canterville family, but she continues to work there after the Otis family buys the property and moves in. And she is the only one who tells the Otis the backstory of the ghost.

  • Lord Canterville
    Lord Canterville is an English aristocrat and the descendant of Sir Simon. At the start of the story, he sells his ancestral family home to the Otis family.

The attitude difference starts out as a difference in belief.  Lord Canterville believes that the ghost is real.  Mr. Otis does not believe the ghost of Sir Simon is real.
The conversation between Mr. Otis and Lord Canterville reflect the cultural differences of their countries. Mr. Otis was from America, in which most of the people have scientific outlook, did not believe in ghosts; that's why he purchased the haunted Canterville chase
Another
 difference between Lord Canterville and Mr. Otis is that Lord Canterville, who is English, takes tradition very seriously, while Mr. Otis, an American, does not. For example, Lord Canterville takes seriously the ghost who haunts Canterville Hall. Mr. Otis, who could care less about ancestral ghosts, 
Eventually, the Otis family does admit that the ghost is real. Instead of acting with fear and trepidation, the Otis family acts either annoyed by the ghost or completely antagonistic. The first actual confrontation between the ghost and the Otis family happens at night. Sir Simon is hoping to scare the Otis family.
The Otis family does not treat Sir Simon in the way that readers would expect them to treat a ghost. When the story begins, Mr. Otis is informed about the presence of the ghost. However, he denies its existence.

He had murdered his wife, Lady Eleanore in the estate's library in 1575. Nine years later, her brothers exacted revenge. Sir Simon was subsequently murdered by his brothers-in-law, who starved him to death and left his body entombed in a secret chamber.


What is the effect of Sir Simon being a ghost?

Sir Simon's ghost haunted the Canterville Chase. He treated his haunting of the mansion as if it were a job, and it was a position he took quite seriously. To that end, he had created 
several gruesome caricatures of his own making, each with its own unique assortment of props, costumes, and scare tactics in order to scare the unsuspecting members of the Canterville family. For three hundred years, the family had lived in absolute terror of Sir Simon, and some even killed themselves as a result of Sir Simon's antics. Thus, Lord Canterville and his family declined to live in Canterville Chase, making its sale to the Otis Family possible.

When the ghost makes his first appearance, Mr. Otis promptly gets out of bed and pragmatically offers the ghost Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator to oil his chains. Angrily the ghost throws the bottle and runs into the corridor. The Otis twins throw pillows on him and the ghost flees.
•The Otis family witnesses reappearing bloodstains on the floor just by the fireplace, which are removed every time they appear in various colors. Despite the ghost's efforts and most gruesome guises, the family refuses to be frightened, leaving Sir Simon feeling increasingly helpless and humiliated. The Otises remain unfazed. In fact, he himself falls victim to tripwires, toy peashooters, butter slides, and falling buckets of water. The mischievous twins rig up their own "ghost", which frightens him.
•Sir Simon sees that Virginia, the beautiful and wise fifteen-year-old daughter, is different from the rest of the family. He tells her that he has not slept in three hundred years and wants desperately to do so. The ghost tells her the tragic tale of his wife, Lady Eleanor de Canterville. Virginia listens to him and learns an important lesson, as well as the true meaning behind a riddle. Sir Simon de Canterville says that she must weep for him, for he has no tears; she must pray for him, for he has no faith; and then she must accompany him to the Angel of Death and beg for Sir Simon's death. She does weep for him and pray for him, and she disappears with Sir Simon through the wainscoting and accompanies him to the Garden of Death and bids the ghost farewell.
•The story ends with Virginia marrying the Duke of Cheshire after they both come of age. Sir Simon, she tells her husband several years later, helped her understand what life is, what death signifies, and why love is stronger than both.

Canterville Chase, where most of the story takes place, is described in Gothic terms. It is an old mansion with secret rooms and passageways, long corridors, carved gargoyles, stained glass windows, and oak paneling. Portraits of long-dead Canterville ancestors, ancient tapestries, and a suit of armor add to the medieval-like setting. Frequent thunder and lightning storms also contribute to the gloomy atmosphere. In short, Canterville Chase seems to fit the stereotype of a haunted house.
•Stormy weather
Storms appear several times in the story, and they are usually described using vivid imagery to help the reader understand what it sounded, looked, and felt like to be inside a creaky old house on a stormy night. The imagery of stormy weather being featured as part of an appropriate setting for supernatural occurrences dated back at least as far as the origins of the Gothic; by including this type of imagery in his story, Wilde positioned it as both participating in and parodying the Gothic tradition. The storm imagery also keeps the reader on edge by raising the possibility that even in a story that seems to be mostly comical, something bad might still happen.
•The Garden of Death
The Garden of Death is described using delicate, peaceful, and beautiful imagery to evoke a sense of what a paradise it is. The ghost is able to describe the garden in such precise terms because he has spent so long longing for it and fantasizing about it, just like how someone who is starving might be able to vividly describe the meal they would most like to eat. The imagery also reinforces the idea of the ghost as an artistic figure, and someone who is sensitive to beauty, which helps to increase sympathy for him.
•Haunted house
Canterville Chase is presented using the traditional imagery of a haunted house: it is large, old, isolated, full of creaky sounds and mysterious nooks and crannies. The imagery used to describe the ancestral house prepares the reader to believe that the story of it being haunted is possibly true, and to envision the house as a setting for supernatural events.
•The fake ghost
The fake ghost is initially described in precise detail, making it easy for the reader to imagine its terrifying appearance. Because it is not clear right away that this new ghost is a trick, the imagery might actually cause the reader to become fearful. By using imagery to create an effect of fear and horror, Wilde makes it clear that he understands why the tradition of the ghost story is powerful, even as he is mocking it at the same time.

Climax: The part of the story where Virginia walks into the secret room and finds the ghost her first instinct was to run away but when she saw the ghost she pitied him and decided to comfort him and then he told her about his feelings of sadness and pain and asks her for help is the climax of the story.
Falling Action: When Virginia helps the ghost reach afterlife ,the family reunites with her again and they hold a funeral for the ghost.
Anti-climax: Lord Canterville's initial warning about the presence of the ghost foreshadows that there will be problems for the Otis family after they move in. Virginia's distress about the bloodstain reappearing every day foreshadows that she is more sensitive than the rest of her family, and that she will have a closer relationship with the ghost later in the story is the anti-climax in the story The Canterville Ghost.
Resolution: The ghost helped Virginia understand how to see what Life is, what Death signifies, and why Love is stronger than both.

Later, it's revealed that the ghost used Virginia Otis's paints to recreate the stain.Virginia chastises Sir Simon for stealing the paints, but after talking to him agrees to help him leave the house and travel to another dimension. Virginia returns from their journey unharmed.
