I also found quite a few articles about how multicultural conversations and global understanding are needed in the classroom. Finally, I found a lot of information for teachers on how to incorporate current events in the classroom, but not a lot of that information was research-based. As I look through these categories of research, my job will be to align them to see what is appropriate for each age and how to approach current events appropriately in the classroom. The last thing I noticed while doing this research is online forums. I noticed quite a few forums involving parents who discuss their opinions on teaching current events in school. While this is not a structured interview or data collection method, it is interesting to see the different opinions out there!

In order to conduct this research, I will have to spend a lot of time looking at literature. I will need to understand current research on child development and mental readiness and how that translates to the classroom. In this sense, a lot of my primary research will be quantitative (what to teach, when to teach it, how to teach it). I would also like to conduct interviews with parents, counselors, and mentors and leaders of groups who discuss current events with students. This will be a part of my qualitative research (feelings and attitudes about lesson delivery and mental appropriateness), which I will then use to align with my quantitative research to compose my findings. Thus, I will be using a mixed methodology to conduct this research.

Research Approach

The approach I will be working under is constructivism. I believe that we construct our vision of reality, and that sometimes the world constructs reality and puts it forth to become ours. I think that the theory of child development has been socially constructed, it can be torn apart re-analyzed. I also think that education can help construct children's views of the world. This approach will help me to construct a new school of thought related to child development, what they can mentally handle, and how schools can make a positive change about people and cultures for the benefit of the future.

In this research, I seek to understand how child development, mental readiness, material delivery, and lessons on local, national, and world current events align. I hope to understand at what age children are ready to talk about current events, and how to appropriately address these events in classrooms today taking developmental and mental readiness into account.
