Knipe introduced the idea of undertaking as many popular writers as he could, paying them to let him use their name on the novels that the machine produces. Knipe goes off to personally meet with every writer on his list, older writers tend to agree more while the younger, more plentiful, writers are obviously more adamant about keeping their occupancy with some resorting to violence. Towards the end of the chapter, he had convinced about 70 percent of his list to accompany him on this risky journey, while the ones who did not comply were almost all itching at the idea of the money they could make to just sign their name over to Knipe. 
Reactions: This is an intriguing idea for someone who knows little about the writing industry, I'm sure it is much more complicated than this makes it out to be. 
Impact Statement: The stress and overload this must put on Bohlen, given it is his company name at risk, must be incredible. Knipe continues to try and relieve and reassure Bohlen that it will be fine as long as the writers keep their mouth shut.
