Although Tom tried living his own American Dream with the money he inherited and success throughout sports. He also has his wife Daisy, but cheats on her with Myrtle and no one can do anything about it and he knows that. "Her husband, among various physical accomplishments, had been one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven-a national figure in a way one of the en who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors anticlimax" (Fitzgerald 6). Although Daisy lives with Tom with all the money and success he brings, she isn't happy at all. She realizes that Tom is cheating, very controlling and abusive. "Well, I've had a very bad time, Nick, and I'm pretty cynical about everything" (Fitzgerald 16). The characters in this book fail to achieve this goal. Gatsby in the process did not get the girl and in the end he died. Myrtle and George tried to work so hard in order to get out of the failure town he was in but they both died and were not able to achieve it. Tom and Daisy think they have achieved the American Dream but they have old money, and lack the hard working aspect of the American Dream. He has achieved his goal of living in this huge house, have everything he has ever wanted and the wife of his dreams. Gatsby had a lot of hopes and dreams for him and Daisy, he wouldn't be able to achieve his version of the American Dream until he has Daisy. There is more than one symbol for the American Dream, for example the Valley of Ashes is shown as the consequences of obsession of wealth in order to acheive the American Dream. Another example is the Green light at the end of Daisy's Dock. "But I didn't call to him for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone--he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock" (Fitzgerald 29).
