When we arrived at Saturraran, we walked on the beach and by the surroundings. We saw all types of trash beside the water: bottles, candy packets, tetra bricks, many types of plastic pieces…

We were there for an hour. Since we were there, we also took the opportunity to collect the garbage that was on the green spaces next to the beach. 

Some of this garbage comes directly from the sea: it is the waste people have previously thrown into the sea and the tides have returned that garbage to the beach. The rest is the garbage that people throw directly onto the beach and its surroundings. 

We put on some gloves and we picked up all the garbage we could. Sometimes we are not even able to realize the amount of garbage that we throw into nature. It is incredible!

3- Description of the creative processes
-Fish: We will cut a 50 cl bottle in half. We will use the stopper part. We will squeeze that half until the edges of the bottle touch. We'll glue those edges. Then, we will cut three pieces of blue cardboard, two for the fins and one for the tail. We will also cut two pieces of eva foam in a circular shape and draw the eyes on those pieces. Finally, we will glue the tail on the back of the piece of the bottle, the two fins on the sides and the eyes on the sides near the cap.

-Jellyfish: Cut the bottle by the neck with a cutter. We cut fringes to the beginning of the base of the bottle. These fringes will be the tentacles of the jellyfish. We bring the flame of the lighter closer to the fringes so that they twist.
- Turtle: We will cut the base of the bottle that will be the shell of the turtle. We paint the shell. Then we draw the base of the turtle on a sheet of Eva rubber: the outline of the legs, the tail and the head.
Then we glue the shell on the base.
-Whale: We will outline the whale's mouth with our marker. We place some guide points to make it easier to trace this on both sides of the bottle. When we finish making the mouth, we will cut with the cutter. We are going to need some scissors, a marker and white and blue paper. With the white paper we are going to make the eyes of the whale and with the blue we will draw the fins and the tail. Then we will glue the eyes, fins and tail to the bottle with silicone. A small piece of cardboard will help us as a support to hold the figure of the whale.  We use enough silicone to fix it and wait for it to dry.

Jellyfish: I have cut the bottle by the neck with a cutter. I have cut the fringes to the beginning of the base of the bottle. These fringes are the tentacles of the jellyfish. I have brought the flame of the lighter closer to the fringes so that they twist. Finally, I have decorated my jellyfish.

Turtle: I have cut the base of the bottle that will be the shell of the turtle. I have painted the shell. Then I have drawn the base of the turtle on a sheet of Eva rubber: the outline of the legs, the tail and the head. Then I have glued the shell on the base. At first I have drawn some eyes to my turtle but finally I have decided to use some eyes that move because they give it more expression.

Whale: We have outlined the whale's mouth with my marker. When I have finished making the mouth, I have cut with the cutter. I have used some scissors, a marker and white and blue paper. I have drawn the whale’s eyes on a green piece of eva foam and on the blue one, I have drawn the fins and the tail. Then I have glued the eyes, fins and tail to the bottle with silicone. I have used a small piece of cardboar as a support to hold the figure of the whale. I have used enough silicone to fix it and wait for it to dry.

This project has consisted of collecting the garbage that we found in the sea and its surroundings to transform it into art. In this sense, we drew, wrote and recorded the whole process step by step. 

On the first of May, I went with my friends to the Saturraran beach to pick up some trash to make my project. While I was picking up the trash, I took photos taking the trash. In particular, I took bottles to do my project. Then, I drew my “visual thinking” about my visit to the beach, and then I wrote the process and I prepared my recording.

Then, once I had the trash, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I could do with that garbage. In my opinion, this has been the most interesting point of the project. Although I have been to the beach and the sea thousands of times, this project has helped me to realize the amount of garbage that we are capable of throwing into the sea. Picking up garbage has made me put myself on the side of the sea. In this way, the idea of returning to the sea the life we are able to destroy has come to my head, and I decided to make “marine alive animals” with that garbage: fish, jellyfish, a whale, and a turtle.

Firsty, I had too few materials to do what I wanted, and thus I returned to the Saturraran beach to find more bottles. I also wrote the explanation of the sculptures in a document and, at the same time, I made a list of materials that I needed in addition to what I already had. Later, after having studied the process that I had to follow, I started making my sculptures. I spent a lot of hours working until I finished my project. I felt very happy because as I advanced my designs it seemed that the garbage was taking life. 

Some days later, I brought my project to the high school and we made an enormous wall. In the wall there were all the explanations about my project step by step. That day, we went to the Zaldupe school to show our project to children. Before doing that, we got prepared to make the  presentations in groups. Some children from the school came and I think that they enjoyed our explanations and  our pieces of art.

In conclusion, I must say that I have learned a lot doing this project and also, I have enjoyed it a lot. To transform the garbage into sculptures of marine animals is like saying to the sea that we apologize. It is like asking the sea for forgiveness, and making an effort to turn pollution into art. I think that, on the one hand, the project makes us realize the great damage we can cause to nature, and on the other hand, it makes us also realize that we are able to rectify it, and to turn pollution into art. This has been a fantastic project!!!
