Text A is a speech from famous author, J K Rowling, therefore she is reading from a script and the content had been meticulously planned. Whereas, Text B is a radio interview in which Kellie has to come up with answers on the spot showing a less scripted approach. They both focus on the idea of their lives and how they’ve progressed (one being more successful than the other). Rowling is speaking to an audience of Ivy League graduates, meaning her language will be more high brow as she is aware of the intelligence that surrounds her and the potential for judgement. Meanwhile, Keelie is speaking to one interviewer and then hundreds of anonymous listeners who aren’t there to listen to her, but the radio. Text A is most likely written to inspire, a success story to young graduates, whereas text B is more of an encouragement for change.

In both texts we see a spoken mode used, which suggests we can see some colloquial features employed. the audience for text a is student from a prestigious university who are like very educated and well off, the speaker may use more advanced language to appeal better to this group. On the other hadn't text B is more personal as its a speech between two people in which one is speaker and the other is listener, this means the speaker may use more casual and personal language and topics of discourse as she isn't presenting a public face. The function of text a is a motivational speech drawing on personal experiences, whereas text b was produced to inform and for educational purposes. Both have autobiographical semantic fields, where text a speaks about their past experiences, and text b talks about present experiences.

Lydia, Louie, Sanaa, Mohammed

Because text A is a spoken piece of text it will have features of spoken language, text B will share similar features as it is also a spoken piece of text. The audience for text A is those at the Harvard university graduation, where as the audience for text B is those who listen to the local radio. So they will also speak in the same manner as keelie and be able to understand her, the same applies for text A as those at the graduation would speak in the same formal manner. The field of text A is the life of J K Rowling, where as the field of text B is single motherhood. And the function of text B is to help other single mothers, where as the function of text A is to inspire others.

Intro

In regards to mode, text A is both in the written and spoken mode; it would have been initially written and drafted, then was spoken by JK Rowling at the address, and then was written down from that delivery. This means it will have been planned before this discourse took place, but also that it may contain spoken features she improvised in the moment. Text B, on the other hand, is in the spoken mode, containing phonetic features such as non-standard pronunciation and lexical indicators such as fillers. The audiences of the pieces vary greatly in regards to scale and education - text A would have been a large audience of Harvard graduates, whereas text B would have been listeners to a local radio station, meaning the formality of the discourse differs greatly. Both texts have a similar auto-biographical field, although where Rowling focuses on how her life has improved, Keelie discusses her current hardships, and the semantic fields reflect this contrast. Both texts share the function of informing the audience on the lives of the speaker, but text A also has an additional field of entertainment shown through use of humour and the flouting of Grice's maxims, while text B also has a persuasive function, demonstrated through the use of repetition and an insistent tone.
- Esme, Sonny, Alice

In regards to lexis, both participants may be attempting to converge with their audience. In text A, Rowling uses very sophisticated, standard lexis such as the adjective 'quixotic' and the stative verb 'extol', whereas in text B the speaker uses more regional features such as 'naught' and 'aught', which are specific to the North of England. Contextually, the audience needs to be considered. In text A, the audience is made up of prestigious Harvard graduates, meaning the situation calls for a high level of formality as that would be the expectation for the setting. By contrast, the text B audience would be made up of locals listening to the radio; they would not expect much formality as often modern radio shows, especially those featuring non-celebrity guests, focus on issues more relevant to the public, meaning there is no need to attempt to sound more formal. This could be linked to Giles' convergence theory; as Rowling's language in text A is very standard, it could be said that she is employing upwards convergence, attempting to sound more similar to her highly educated audience. By contrast, the speaker in text B shows downwards convergence, using more regional lexical features to become more relatable to the local audience.
- Esme, Sonny, Alice
