Before the Napoleonic wars ended, the British had most control over trading and had several advantages. After the war, the British had to return all the Dutch colonies and the Dutch regained control over trades. The Dutch imposed new policies which include disallowing the British to trade at Dutch ports and also imposing high taxes on the British traders who traded at Batavia, the only Dutch port allowed for the British to trade in. This greatly cut the profit of the British and their economy also dropped. Therefore, they concluded in setting up a port along the main trade route — The Straits of Melaka.
