My growth in arguing and understanding genre

In English 102 we focused on creating arguments as well as genres. The artifacts I chose are my annotated bibliography, our in-class argument presentation, our in-class genre piece, our genre lists, and lastly our project two assignment.
Though I had obviously written argumentative essays before, I feel like I never understood the reasoning behind why I should include specific points in my argument. Our assignments in this class helped me realize why including things like expert quotes develops good arguments.

We also covered genre, and I had no idea what this meant at the beginning of the class. I will always remember this genre lesson because it's something I will be able to apply throughout life in many different ways. U also feel like it’ll contribute to my career because of the fact that I’m a marketing major.

The biggest thing is that I actually saw the connections between everything we've done in class and in the end, I felt I got to see how they all connect to each other and how everything I learned can be used.

Canva template to defend an argument

When we had to comment on each major project back in January, I had no idea what the genre project meant. The only way I had thought about the word "genre" was when it came to music and books, so I was confused to hear we would be making examples of "genre". In class, we had to select templates from either "business" or "marketing" categories in Canva and defend an argument we had made in a different activity. This was our first exposure to genre as most of the templates in these categories had similar things on them. Without even acknowledging it, I began to notice what it meant to be a certain genre. The template I picked resembled a newspaper front page and I immediately knew I had to include headings, subheadings, and pictures. Most importantly a title as well. The purpose of my newspaper was to argue a certain viewpoint on Ariana Grande as well, so it was basically like a mini-project 2.

Genre lists

As an in-class assignment, we had to find multiple different examples of one genre. For example, I had billboards and postcards, so I gathered a bunch of images of various billboards and postcards. After we collected these images, we created lists in the class of the different elements we saw in each example. To paint a picture, I noticed that all billboards had a large, main text body as well as images and references to either a brand logo or even a website. Through doing this we were able to see the actual things that make each genre what it is. I got inspiration from this exact activity to make a billboard for my final project two and I think it helped me create a basis for what I should include on my own billboard. It also helped to be able to refer to the lists my classmates made when I was looking for ideas for my second genre piece.

Project 1: Annotated bibliography

Our annotated bibliography was the first thing we did in English 102 and it was different than anything I had done before. This project would come to be very important though, as our topic would stick with us the rest of the semester. What we had to do was pick any topic we wanted and then research it. We had to find certain types of sources and then write a brief paragraph about each source, including things like it’s purpose, who wrote it, etc. I really loved this way of researching because it felt very organized and like I slowly grew a strong understanding of walkable cities (which was my topic). Sometimes researching can be overwhelming and you're not sure how to organize all the information you're consuming. This bibliography provided a really strong basis for me to do the rest of our activities in class and helped me grow in my research abilities.

In-class arguments

An in-class activity we did was basically arguing. We were directed to use certain elements of proving your point such as providing a personal story, using credible sources, having quotes from experts, and having statistics or historical data. Though I was adopted into Mic and Julian's group, I still felt like I learned a lot through presenting to the class and receiving input from Mr. Bottai. I saw how important it is to have these things to backup your argument as they give you facts that are hard to argue with and will provide you with a well-rounded argument if you include all or most of them. Through this same assignment I also was able to see how things like historical data or quotes are flexible to any argument. My classmates presented with the same instructions we had and were able to form each thing to fit what they were arguing.

Project 2: Genre Pieces

The genre pieces project was my favorite thing we've done all semester. I think it pulled together all of the knowledge we learned the whole semester into one place and also gave me the opportunity to be creative. I was arguing to fund walkable cities, meaning I had to think about all the elements you need to create an effective argument. It also required me to fully understand what it means to be a genre because I had to create my own piece. Lastly, it brought back the topic of walkable cities that I had been focusing on since January and further confirmed that my annotated bibliography caused me to deeply understand my topic. What the project was was essentially creating our own genre pieces, I did a billboard and TikTok, in advocacy for our stance on an argument relating to the topic we had picked at the beginning of the semester. This showed me how all the ideas we've been learning this semester intertwine to create one thing.
