In chapter 33:

"It was no good , you know, " OfGlen says near the side of my head. "It was a shredder after all." She means Janine´s baby, the baby that passed through Janine on its way to somewhere else. (p.214)

In Gilead if a baby is not born to the requirments needed in society it is taken from the mother and never returned. The authority figure defines the worth of the newborn child and because of fear the mother cannot advocate for herself or the baby because of what might happen to her if she does. The song Every breath you take by The police expresses how a person in power can always be watching your every move and control everything you do since they are above you. Like in Gilead, and taking children that are not good enough for their standards.

This is a version of the song "Just a girl" originally made by No Doubt but given a remix by Florence + The Machine. This song represents the bit of resilience that is seen by Serena Joy and Offred inside chapter 31. Midway into the chapter Serena Joy tells Offred that her time is running out hinting that if Offred doesn't produce a baby soon then she will be exiled off to be an unwomen, Offred says she knows but then as the conversation progresses Serena Joy talks to Offred about helping her get pregnant, with another man. In Gilead, if a handmaid gets pregnant by another man that isn't the commander it is punishable by death for both the Handmaid and the man, if a handmaid fails to get pregnant she will be punished. Many people especially women around the world can connect to this as in many societies around the world, women are still the ones to blame for failed pregnancy and not the man. This shows how women are undermined inside of not just Gilead but also in modern society.
