Ever since the beginning, when Lennie wanted to leave, I had a feeling something bad was going to happen. At first I thought something would happen to George, and we would see Slim take over the caretaker role for Lennie.

Honestly I had heard that the ending was super sad and it made people cry but it didn't impact me that much. I feel like I always knew that something bad was going to happen kind of like what Leena said, because I knew about Steinbeck's background as a writer. I feel it really goes to show the effects of the Great Depression.

I agree with Yoingjae that all of the foreshadowings pointed to an ending that involved death. I was surprised that it was George that was on the other end of the gun that killed Lennie. To me, Lennie's death symbolizes that the American Dream of owning land and being self-sufficient is impossible during the Great Depression and it is only a distracting illusion.

I think that Steinbeck intentionally used small foreshadowings with the death of many small animals such as the mice and dog to lead up to Lennie's death. That made the whole ending kind of expected instead of sudden. The event with Candy's dog also led to George himself killing Lennie rather than Curly killing him.
