Jose, a 16 year old boy who immigrated from El Salvador, describes the first time he learned what American racism meant. One day he was walking home from school with a friend when they walked past a white couple. The couple started whispering about Latinos and immigration, and Jose knew they were talking about him and his friend. Jose also mentions at school he feels like he is not excepted by his classmates because he speaks Spanish. He recalls a time where a student told him "this is America. You should speak English".

The boys weren't doing anything but walking home from school. It is also really upsetting because that couple don't know what Jose went through in oder to come to America he left behind all his friends and his entire family to escape the gangs and to have a better life.
