At first you might feel importer syndrome, but just know it’s okay to not know anything. Luckily, the environment here is so welcoming and you can ask as many questions as you can :)

Start making friends because they’re going to be your support system! Ask lots and lots of questions! Part of learning is unlearning methods that may not be working, so collaborating is key! Take your breaks!! You deserve it.

Here are some words of advice:

• Set boundaries. If you have apps on your phone that you use for work (ie. Outlook, Teams, Google Voice), make sure to turn off notifications when you’re not working.

• Your new ideas and creativity are welcome here! I’ve never worked anywhere else that has been so supportive of me proposing new ideas such as workshops, events, and initiatives for students.

• Communicate with your retention specialist — this is especially important if you’re a coach in an Empowerment Program and navigating having multiple supervisors. Let your retention specialist know about any special cases or incidents that come up with your students, any questions you have, etc. Just keep them in the loop & count on them to have your back.
