Soccer!
The family that I nanny for has an eight year-old son. He tried to teach me how to play soccer this summer so that I could play with him (because his sister is too small to play against him). When he was teaching me to play, we were just playing soccer, and he was correcting me as we went. I learned from experience and actively playing with him.

Microsoft Excel!
My freshman year of college I took a statistics class. Our professor taught us how to navigate Excel by having us actively follow along with her and performing the tasks she was doing on the projector screen in the class. We were actively learning as we completed the tasks ourselves with the help of her direction.

Bellwork Questions!
My high school English teacher was very intentional with her bellwork questions. She would give us questions that were related to the content we would be studying in class that day. These questions opened our minds and allowed our curiosity to roam, while forming our ideas around the topic. We would then learn during the lesson, bringing our prior thoughts and knowledge to discussion with one another.

Follow-Up Questions
My same high school teacher would use follow-up questions to gauge understanding and allow students to answer the question, "Why did we learn this today." This process allowed students to make connections between their learning and the importance of said learning in their lives. These questions allow students to be reflective and share their ideas with one another.

Junior II Cohorts!
In our Junior II cohorts this semester, students are enrolled in the same courses with the same group of students. This allows students to build and foster a community of learning with other students that are experiencing the same thing as them. This builds an effective learning community and allows students to collaborate and assist one another both inside and outside of the (virtual) classroom. We are also in the same student teaching cohort. These things allow us to find comfort in familiarity and share unique experiences with one another.

Group Projects!
In school, I have always loved group projects! When teachers assign group projects and give individual students roles to complete within the group, the teacher allows for collaboration and understanding that is shared by a whole group of students. This is beneficial for student learning and helps them to be active participants in their learning.

Math!
All of my professors have done a great job of using real-world examples to create an understanding of formulas and techniques. These real-world examples help with understanding.

Science!
In middle school my favorite project that I completed was in seventh grade science! My teacher made us complete a 3D model that represented the inner-workings of a cell. Instead of making us replicate a cell, which could have been boring, we were required to create a "cell city" in which we had to match different cell parts with city features. This allowed students to express creativity while also understanding the function of cells in a way that had a real-world connection.

Planning Course Schedules!
Following the onset of syllabus week, I immediately begin making spreadsheets of all of the work that is due in my classes. One of my professors (and several of my teachers) in high school encouraged me to make a schedule that had all of the dates, as well as a weekly planner. This helped with time management and being intentional with the goal of completing assignments on time allowed me to set goals for the effort and time spent on each assignment.

Curriculum Units!
When creating lesson plans for some of my courses, we have had to complete a curriculum unit plan. With these assignments, we had to plan ahead (sometimes for weeks at a time) and create a schedule that allowed students to create these intentional goals and give them the information they need to prepare for learning.
