  • Speak simply but clearly. (avoid difficult colloquial language)
  • Model your instructions: one or two examples will be sufficient or give additional examples if they are "new" students.
  • Use extra-linguistic devices to aid meaning: gestures, facial expressions, voice, and visual. 
  • Break down instructions when they are are several steps. 
  • Give students a time limit.
  • Check for understanding: "How many students are you going to interview" (concept-check questions)
  • Avoid giving vague instructions.

Even so, there are professors that their instructions are not clear. Therefore, I do believe that giving good, clear and a simple instruction is the key to a successfully activity. I personally liked the tip to break the instruction into pieces or steps.
