During what I like to call "coronacation", I have noticed that my sleep schedule is quickly deteriorating. Before digital learning began, I got used to staying up until 3-4 am and then waking up at 1 pm. I had nowhere to go, and my crazy hours allowed me to FaceTime with my friends whom I could no longer see in real life. Now that school has started, however, I am still in the same schedule. Although I tend to fall asleep between 12:30 and 1 am on nights before live classes, most of the time I stay up until 4 am on FaceTime. It many not be the healthiest option in the world, but it gives me more time to speak with my friends, so it is most certainly worth it.

ZOE: As the owner of several small businesses, how has the outbreak affected work (both economically and physically)?
ARTHUR: Well, the outbreak has made changes to all businesses. Number 1, we have had to learn to work remotely, which is difficult because it is hard to get attention from people and communicate. 2, it's hard to talk and meet with our clients. We are used to physical interactions with clients, but since we can't do that, it has made it harder for us to get more clients. On top of that, our clients are having the same problems, so it trickles down. What we are seeing is a difficult time to maintain business and sales and make sure that everyone can get paid.
ZOE: What have you been doing to stay productive while working from home?
ARTHUR: In what I do, we are very busy all the time, so working from home makes us busier because we depend on communication. When we are working from home, it's hard to have simple communications like seeing someone in the office. Productivity has gone down because we are spending more time receiving emails and phone calls, and not putting as much time into work. In effort to counter lower productivity--which is natural in these circumstances--we have implemented mandatory video conferencing such as Zoom and a requirement that employees can only check their emails 3x a day so that they are not trapped sending and receiving emails constantly.

ZOE: How has staying home for almost 2 months affected your everyday life?
HEATHER: Well, it is certainly a different type of schedule since my kids are home, so I am obviously home with them making sure they have everything for online school. I am also not able to interact with people or do my normal routine. I've made the best of staying home by exercising and going on the Peloton, getting fresh air, taking more bike rides with [Zoe], do more things outside, and keep structure in the house to maintain a schedule and get more projects done.
ZOE: What steps have you taken to stay sane during quarantine?
HEATHER: Being on a schedule! Waking up at a certain time, still exercising since it makes me feel a lot better, organizing the house, and volunteering to help kids with special needs have fun (virtually).

Today, May 4, I am appreciating several things. Obviously, I am grateful that my family has access to adequate food and water, shelter, and doctors. Not to mention, I am fortunate enough to be able to FaceTime my friends often so that I can stay in touch. Regarding the specific events of today, I was able to celebrate May 4th (the national Star Wars day) with my friends via FaceTime and learn how to skateboard outside. I am glad that I am focusing on the little details that are making quarantine enjoyable, instead of dwelling in sadness and negativity. I hope that in the future, I will sustain this positive mindset.

JOURNAL REFLECTION: New Hobbies

In this journal reflection, I wanted to discuss the new hobbies and activities I have picked up over quarantine, the first being penny boarding. My uncle got me a penny board (a type of skateboard) in mid-April and I began to ride it in early May. It took a while to learn how to balance, but it is actually very enjoyable. I have also started to work out. I don't do sports, so I decided to start working out as an outlet for physical activity. For me, this means doing workouts from YouTube or going on bike rides with my mom. Not to mention, I have started to play chess again! I finally found a friend to play chess virtually with. It has motivated me to begin practicing like I used to in sixth grade. Lastly, I have been making more meals lately. I have fallen in love with avocado toast, and I make it almost daily. These are just some new activities/hobbies that I have tried in quarantine.
