The original version of this story raises these questions among others: what should be socially acceptable/allowable to say to OTHER people about their children? For that matter, what should be socially acceptable and unacceptable for you to say to your own children? Where do we draw the line between what's polite and what's abusive & rude? Talk out these components with your neighbors, and answer below--THOROUGHLY. Be sure to comment on your colleagues' work for full credit, and to generate ideas for your own post.

I feel like the only thing that might be socially acceptable is to comment on their behavior, like if they are more of a trouble maker or if they're calm. But even in that respect, it depends on the way you describe them. Like you can say positive things about their child like "oh they're so well behaved!" as opposed to "he is a bad kid who never listens". Behind the parents back, though, you could get away with being more harsh as opposed to in front of the parents. People would frown upon you commenting on a child's look, for sure, or their intelligence; but for a select few, you could get away with in. I feel as if the general consensus, however, is to steer away from that as it is considered rude and disrespectful. In a way, I agree, I don't want someone to talk about how ugly my child is; but we should be able to comment on their behavior if they are especially disrespectful or misbehaved, but in a way that offers help or sympathy

The parents children should have some proper manors and that some parents don’t control their children. The reason is children with not manors can develop into a bad behavior can probably cause more issues in the future. The thing that socially acceptable to say to a child would be “be more appropriate to others because you don’t want it to happen to you”. Th dress on is figuring out when a child is rude or polite is based on their attitude towards others. This can show what personality the child shows towards other children.

In society someone shouldn't talk about other people children because it would be impolite. Also a lot of parents use other kids as an example on how they do well and compare them to their own child. This then causes their own child's confidence to drop as they are always being compared to someone that is better then them and causes them to do bad. If it is your own child then you are allowed to say whatever you want about them because well you made them and you decide everything they do. Not saying that is a good thing but that is someone you are allowed to do.

I feel that being able to comment on their intelligence and their morals, and most definitely behavior would be socially acceptable. And being able to speak positively of the child for example when they do something good you would praise them. I feel like like talking down to anyone is wrong especially to a child who is still growing. But also being able to criticize their behavior such as if they are bullying another kid or doing something destructive, people would expect you to correct the child in a respectful manner. The way you discipline the child is also important since beating your child is not socially acceptable and shouldn’t be.

When it comes to your own child i get that dispalining them is okay but don't go so far to the point where you have mantel scared your own child you are their safe place and it is not right for you to call them ugly or stupid for no reason. Go ahead and make sure your child is safe but being a bit strict but don't mix that up with harsh, mean comments and bullying because those are 2 different things.

That greatly affects a child’s mind and frankly it’s quite annoying. If I was the one comparing them to other parents I would’ve been beaten up and would be subjected to 4 hour long sermon and years of them bringing it up when I did something they didn’t like. If people wants to be respected then they should respect others.

When speaking on the topic on what is okay to say to children it all depends on how the people commenting and the how the parents are raised. However I do believe that there is a certain line that shouldn't be crossed. I believe it's all about intention, if the person commenting intends to hurt the child then that is not acceptable, but if what is said is not meant to hurt the child but instead be used as constructive criticism I think it's okay. Wording of that criticism matters a lot more than people think, especially when trying to make a comparison between the child and something else.

in todays world i am constantly surprised by how impolite and rude people are to others, and the fact that they are completely okay with themselves after what just came out of their mouth. Children should not have to feel lower than their peers or feel like a burden, because children's feelings are more fragile than adults and teens, they simply cannot understand that this world is cruel. And so saying disrespectful and hurtful things to a child on purpose just gives them an intro early on to how society is, especially if you are a parent, because kids look up to their parents and are very influenced by them growing up which can interfere with that child's morals and alot more if that parent is constantly setting a bad example. i think the line is drawn when there is a bad comment on the appearance of the child or if someone is trying to make that child feel stupid or when the child seems negatively effected by what was said. On the other hand if this child needs discipline and there are comments on their behavior, morals or if they are just uninterested in learning then i think it is okay to talk about socially.

There are ways to speak to someone even your own kids. People may say "I'd rather hear the truth, than the lie" but it's how you say it, such as your tone of voice & actions (body movements). Parents shouldn't be comparing their kids to other kids because it's not right and not everyone has the same mind/thoughts. Everyone thinks differently! Nobody should be talked about!
