Reading fiction played a valuable role to President Barack Obama. He believed reading was a mental exercise and an escape to someplace else. He searched to balance the kind of factual reading he had to do as president.

Fences- Fiction and Art

August Wilson’s character of Fences, Troy Maxon, is roughly based on Wilson’s stepfather. Both were gifted athletes not able to attend college and both did illegal things for an income. While the play is based on parts of his life it is not fully a true story. Although, Wilson did want to provide a truthful lens through the lives of African Americans. Wilson explained that not only was it fiction it was art. Although Troy seemed like he was the ‘villain’ of the story I believe you can related to him in a way. Troy struggles in his daily life with his sense of failure and disappointment when he wasn’t able to achieve his goals. When you don’t feel a sense of accomplishment in your own life you can destroy everyone around you.

A Lesson Before Dying

A Lesson Before Dying may be a fiction story but it’s constructed around the true story of Willie Francis, a young black man sentenced to death by the electric chair. Looking at Francis and Jefferson case you can see multiple similarities. The state accused both men of murdering a white man and had a attorney's who didn't want to defend them and were sentenced to die by electric chair. The whole book is based on Grant trying to teach Jefferson about morality but in the end Grant too uncovers education as a mutual effort. He teaches Jefferson but learns to be a more moral person by help bettering Jefferson. Although a fiction story, this book gives unbearably painful emotions and I love how the story tells things exactly the way they were in the rural south for African Americans.

This is book gives an honest outlook on The author uses nice images and description to really bring the book and the characters to life. This book has a lot of scenarios that a young girl like myself can relate to. It gives you perspective on what young girls go through and what they think. Although it's about a young girl it's not all sunshine and rainbows it shows tragedies and triumphs. I wish I had this book to read when I was younger it's a great read.

This book's gives you the perfect picture of the characters. It shows diverse kinds of African Americans heritage and family traditions. Even if you’re not black you can still relate to the characters emotion and character.

Just like The House on Mango Street, "Girl" is very relatable. Its beautiful short story that explores the important theme of gender inequality. I would share this to how gender and the roles linked with gender can greatly define one's identity. The mother keeps telling her daughter how not to be "the slut she is so hell bent on becoming." Even though there is no proof that the daughter has disrespected her mother or her teaching her in that way.

Eveline was a story that questions about personal experiences where she had to choose between the unknown scary future or the well known past. She is too scared to drop her obligations and do what she wishes. This is a great story that deals with life’s tough times to arrive at a decision. Although I do not agree with her stating with her father that mistreats her.

But to the narrator this was all memories, its just recollection of his life with his father. It makes you question, is he an abusive dad or a loving father? It was a dark story but I loved it.
